Guy probably lived 50 years of his life using those words meaning the equivalent to dumb or dbag but you gotta adapt to the times, just can't do it. Probably warrants a suspension so that WV can show the public they don't tolerate it.

I attended Catholic schools entirely from K-12, and I feel like homophobia and gay bashing was more prevalent and acceptable there than it was in the wider population. It was after I had graduated, but the school/concerned parents even tried to shut down the student newspaper over students advocating legalization of gay marriage. So to to hear someone using homophobic language about a Catholic college is pretty ironic to me.

Also, with Xavier being in Cincinnati, Huggins has to have a long and personal history dealing with that basketball program. I imagine that he has been in many recruiting battles against them over the years, and that makes me think that this isn't the first time he has used that phrase with regards to Xavier.

Looks like his lawyers have written a statement for him. I doubt anything happens to him although I feel like some discipline would be appropriate.

I am 62 and have never said that word. When I was in high school, I heard it said by boys frequently but never girls. I never heard it at our house either and I had four brothers.

Being Catholic in small town southern Iowa, I did hear slur words about Catholics frequently as well. One of the high school teachers brought in her husband’s KKK robe and hood for some bizarre show and tell. The handful of us Catholic students, the two Jewish students, and the three black students all tried to decide at lunch one day if it was aimed at all of us or just a select group or two, or if the teacher was just clueless in general. My brothers were old enough to remember the Klan burning a cross in our churchyard, but it was before I was born.

I can count on one hand the number of schools I imagine are less likely to fire someone for using that word than West Virginia. Huggy Bear may luck out by being in one of the least progressive places in America.

Also, as someone in high school in the late 90's/early 00's, I heard "that's gay" and "that's Jewish" used approximately 100 times a day. Half the teachers wouldn't even say anything and the ones that did would have a very light "tsk tsk" type reaction. I don't recall knowing a single person who actually got in trouble for using those phrases. Crazy how much things have changed in 20 years (in a good way).

Yeah. Bundle of sticks, and later was used to describe poor (like…no money “poor”) old ladies who would make a very small amount of money picking up sticks. From there it just continued to morph into what it is today, which is just one of a few meanings.

The shorter version can mean someone is just really tired if you add -ged to the end.
Please. A bundle of sticks morphed into a reference to a gay person because someone who was found out to be gay in that time period was burned at the stake over a “bundle of sticks “. JFC quit trying to minimize the word. Everyone who has used it knew it was a gay slur.

I just heard the comments made by Huggins. His comments were terrible as he disparaged Catholics, the gay community and the entire Xavier University community. Also, what was that comment about throwing the "item" on the floor? Very low class! If the Iowa State Head basketball, football, or any coach stated that, I would want them fired.

All I can say, is RIP Johnny Orr. Several of his one liners would be soooo taboo today. I'm just glad, in my prime, I had the humor of Johnny without anyone calling for his head.
I actually haven't seen too many people call for his head. Some but I don't know if it's even majority. Times change though, sometimes for better or worse.
If Johnny was coaching today, he probably would be fired over drunk driving. Everyone on the planet knew he would crush them at his place on Duff (kind of where Best Buy is) then hop in the car.

A few points from a 63 year old who grew up in WV.

1. When i was growing up, calling someone a fag meant he was a wuss or *****. You're such a faggot would have same meaning as you're such a *****. The word itself isnt offensive, but it depends on the context.

2. Mike Gundy used the "N" word and wasnt fired.

3. Huggins is a legend at WVU, and has the number 1 portal class coming in.

The AD has been the Ad for like 6 months.....

What i think would be appropriate is this.
A. no suspension or firing.
B. He donates A LOT of money to a Gay cause.
C. He agrees to retire after next season.

An immediate firing would torpedo the program, and that isnt fair to the players, donors, or fans.
