I've used the old technique where I kept asking questions as I walked the person out.

As I open the door just lob out a question about the job search or something to get them talking outside of the traditional interview setting.

FYI - you are being interviewed and assessed until you are in the car and gone. Don't tell me you left the old job because the boss was an ass

I've posted on here before but the person who ran out of my office and out to her car still is crazy. She was struggling a little so I offered to get her some water and buy her time to collect herself. She grabbed her **** and ran (I mean ran) out the door. I'm trying to follow her out because you can't just have non-employees running around with NPI available. Good stuff.

Agreed on your points.

But to sum up my story, it was because he interviewer was asking me to do all the talking as opposed to the more traditional interview where they ask questions and I answer. I don't disagree with that approach, it's just at the time, it hit me from left field.

Mine was fairly benign but had one while laid off that was kind of my last straw while searching down in Wichita. Through friends of friends I got connected with a company that had this opening that was an okay fit. I get to the interview and granted it was a Friday but the interviewer walked in with a ball cap on, jeans etc. The interview from my side went well but I could tell something was off and they were just kind of going through their paces.

I didn't get it and later found out I was the leading candidate until they interviewed someone else a day or two before that was next to no money and was overqualified. So we decided that was it for us down there and moved back to CR.

I get your point and the lack of transparency from the employer made for a waste of time.

I've had those situations too. One time I was called in for an interview. Great!

I show up and it's a cattle call. Hundreds of people who were brought up in groups to a floor where we were expected to mingle and "get to know" the management team.

I played that game for a few minutes, but found it nearly impossible to butt in on conversations without seeming rude and then getting my resume in that person's hand.

BS and never a company I'd want to work for. So I laughed, took in the experience, and get the hell out of there.

I do at least 100 interviews a year, I am shocked out how many people google answers, when I think they are doing, this, I toss in a question that is impossible, and the #1 thing on google is a fake answer. If you answer it that way, I pretty much quickly end the interview.

Just curious, what kind of questions do you ask that has an answer on Google?

I assume these are over the internet interviews? People wouldn't really be brazen enough to do that in person would they?

Close to 10 years ago, a large hospital system in the PNW flew me out to Seattle for a day of in-person interviews. Of course there were travel snafus, but we made it work. After a day of meeting with and talking to pretty much everyone in the office, they walked me out to the lobby. And then quickly hustled me out the door, because someone had just pepper-sprayed someone else. Possibly one or more vagrants were involved.

As we were saying our goodbyes - outside - I was assured that things like that never happen. It wasn’t going to work, regardless, but that was the icing on the cake. Well, that and the drug deal that I almost accidentally walked through the middle of when I got off the Lightrail from the airport. Welcome to Seattle!

Incidentally, on a different trip, a few years later, I was asked for money by a homeless man… that was smoking a joint. What a time to be alive.

I interviewed for a job at a law firm in Aspen, CO back in 2001.

The founding partner walks into my interview, after talking to the managing partner for 15 minutes. Founding partner is wearing a track suit, covered in sweat.

He proceeds to ask me:
You married?
Any kids?
Are you gay?
Are you on any drugs?
You drink?

All questions you cannot ask in an interview.

Got the job anyways. Moved from Des Moines to Aspen a month later

Oh, I forgot one from way back. Was interviewing for a small P&L job, manage about 3 people directly. Get a guy with relevant and interesting experience in the market, but not quite what we do. Has been a travelling sales guy for years, very successful, very slick. In the interview, wants us to pay for him to relocate to CR from Florida. Okay not unusual, part of the package.

But then proceeds to say he will only work 4 days a week, needs one full day per week to work on his golf game - very important to him and there's a business benefit for golfing with customers. He thought he was so above the job, that we would just beg him to take it and he could just ask for anything. Needless to say, that was a big NOPE from me.

Found out later... he owned a house in CR, and his wife and kids lived there, and he lived with them when he wasn't in Florida. He was going to move back in with them permanently, but wanted a big sign-on check for "moving" here and maybe buying a bigger house. He just thought he could con us into it. Dodged a bullet.

@Angie can back me up on this, but I have a go-to story about the saga of the Cambodian Lucky Iron Fish, that I have used in multiple interviews. I work in IT and I use it as an allegory for problem solving and tailored solutions. It's never not had a good reaction, and I've had multiple people tell me after the fact that it was something memorable that set me apart from other candidates.

The fact that the science behind it has been debunked, doesn't change the effectiveness of the story as an allegory.

Yeah we have done zoom interviews exclusively since Covid. I think I have only done 1 in person in 3 years.

My favorite occurred interviewing for a weekend job during seminary. Interviewed with the HR manager for a few minutes, when he left urgently to get his manager.
That interview went amazing. Manager concluded with "I have been praying for a candidate just like you. You are God's answers to my prayers for my life and the life of my company. I'll be calling you Monday to offer you the job."

He never called. I called on Wednesday just to get the news over with.
Otherwise, now I specialize in being yelled at during interviews.

Interviewed at a Family Video once and basically didn't get the gig because I was honest and said I didn't really do a fake happy dance thing for people.

The manager/guy hiring me was a former Hok football player who had big 'Big Man Campus for life' vibes so I dodged one there.

Other 'interview': I tried serving at a fairly corporate restaraunt and was just awful. AWFUL.

After my 3rd training shift of screwing up, both front house and back house manager sat me down and I think they were going to fire me gently. They asked me how I thought I was doing and I said 'awful'.

I think they liked my honesty and general work ethic (my sucking wasn't without effort) and in the conversation they mentioned a bus/barback spot was open so I just said 'Maybe I could just do that' and got that job which was a way better fit.

Interviewed at a job fair in college. The guy from the get go didn't even make eye contact. Said "uh huh" a lot to everything I said. Reminded me of the radio station scene in Wayne's World. Needless to say I didn't get a second interview. LOL!

First job interview out of college had to fly to Greensboro, NC. I made it fine, my luggage did not. Formal dinner that night and here I am in a grey ISU Champion sweatshirt and blue jeans. Couple guys where questioning my attire and I told them, “Well, you said your were looking for someone who stands out…” I told them what really happened, but they took my first answer to heart. They liked my quick thinking and the fact I could talk with them without any hesitation. Needless to say I got the job as it was in sales.
