From what I understand, Casey's had a leadership change in recent years, and it wasn't terribly well received. They shed quite a bit of talent at the corporate level, as a result. Also, there had previously been a bit of a modus vivendi with Kwik Star/Kwik Trip where they didn't expand aggressively in Iowa and Casey's didn't push too far into Wisconsin. Casey's new leadership breached that gentleman's agreement, and Kwik Star)Trip responded in kind, resulting in a lot more competition.
This makes a lot of sense. In 2019 Casey's acquired all the Fantasy's convenience stores, then all the Bucky's stores in 2021.

Growing by acquisition but it seems they skewed from the original business model that made it successful

And how do you compete with the Kum and Go name? Perhaps Casey's should change their name to Wham Bam Thank You Mam!

I really am impressed by Kwik Trip/Star, they’re probably the best convenience stores I’ve ever been in. Prices don’t seem higher than Casey’s tho the food and service is much, much better. Kind of reminds me of convenience stores in Europe.

Most Casey’s employees I see spend as much timsicalle out in front of the store smoking as they do working. Kwik Star for me.

This is the case in Roland for sure. It used to great but has had so many management changes, and now kids are basically running the store. They are always on the phone or in the office f ucking off. Their pizza was great but now it sucks. I havent had a caseys pizza in years.

With the exception of the bathrooms, this has been most Cedar Rapids Casey's for the past 5 years. The card readers at the one in Robbins were borke for over a year. Kwik Star is cleaning their clock and rightfully so.
Casey's bought out Handimart, which were usually sketchy and dirty around CR, then slapped a Casey's sign on them and said, 'ok, we're good'.

Someone tell Kwik Star to stock 87 octane no alcohol for those of us still driving older cars that were never designed to use anything but 0% ethanol.

Agree, Casey's has declined. Locally in Central Iowa we have 4 close to our home and their pizza sucks in each. Also filthy restrooms when I travel. Kwik Star is number one for our family now.

My beef with Casey’s would be the cheap quality gas, slowest pumps around, inconsistent pizza quality per location, tiny bathrooms and usually only one person working a register even during the lunch hour.

It is. VERY cheap bananas, onions, potatoes. Eggs, milk, juice, bread, butter are all grocery store price (not gas station marked up). Decent baked goods, good selection of hot sandwiches, outstanding chicken.

If there is some kind of automated machine that makes any kind of drink you can think of, the best Kwik Star stores will have one.

Next level selection of ready-eat hot items. We pretty much only buy milk, butter, eggs, bacon from KS because it's usually cheaper and more convenient than a grocery store.

I'm not sure if related, but stopped at Casey's yesterday and we had card reader issues. Employee claimed corporate got a great deal with a new supplier and changed them all out. He said it was a down grade, but saved corporate money.

Casey's gets me there for the pizza, otherwise they wouldn't be the first choice.

My local store has 2 checkout lines. One card reader wasn't functional yesterday, so they had to make one line cash-only. On Thanksgiving. When they were the only place open.

Heard an employee talking with a customer (who may have also been an employee) about how it was baffling, because these readers were "brand new."

I've also seen a couple of times recently where the insert-style reader at the pump was marked as out of order, yet the scan-style reader right next to it was working fine.

They discontinued the amazing blueberry muffin they had for decades and replaced it with a dried out nasty ass blueberry crumble muffin. That's where they fell the hardest.
