Bicycle right-of-way question

Treat a bicycle the same as you would a car. So you don't pass them and immediately turn causing them to slow down because you wouldn't do that to a car. But if they were on the sidewalk, they were in the wrong already (whether legally required or not, they should be in the street). Regardless, when making a turn you are obligated to yield.

The thing for me as an observer is that if bikes are treated like pedestrians when on a normal sidewalk there is no way that the vehicle wouldn't have been well through the crosswalk/entrance prior to the pedestrian getting there, even if they were jogging/running. But the rate of speed of the bikes made it such that if they didn't slow at all they would probably have hit the back passenger door to rear bumper area of the vehicle.

I believe this comes down to municipalities/laws and common sense. In theory, the cyclists should not be riding on the sidewalks, which is not really enforced. If they were walking their bike across the street, the car would have to stop.

As a cyclist, I would of yielded to the driver and made eye contact to determine intent/aggressive nature of the driver. I figure if I am on a bike, I lose all ties in accidents with cars. In reality, they should of been on the road in my opinion and not the side walk. They should of yielded to the car for no other reason to be safe and make friends. These riders were not paying attention or just dicks.

Bikes should not be on sidewalks if it’s not a bike lane. Bike should have the right away. My rule is if one party can be severely injured while the other suffers a dent, let the unprotected person go first.

Bicycles aren't supposed to be on a sidewalk. If it is a rec trail that is a different story. Regardless, I would have allowed the bicycles to pass if I was driving, mostly because I don't want them running into my car and causing damage.
This is jurisdiction specific. There is no prohibition generally against bikes on sidewalks.

Bicyclists want respect when they are on the road, then they should follow the rules of the road. About saw a kid get run over when he decided he wasn't going to stop at a stop sign when a car was already in the intersection turning left ahead of him.

Just because I'm a bit of legal nerd, I did go look up the city bike code yesterday afterwards. Here it is:

6-7-14: OPERATION ON SIDEWALK:

Bicycles may be operated upon the public sidewalks in a careful and prudent manner, except where signs are erected to prohibit riding on the sidewalk. Every person lawfully operating a bicycle upon a public sidewalk, shall yield the right of way when approaching a pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing.

Re: stop signs imo bikes should be allowed to slow with intent to stop if needed but if nobody's there, pass through.

Stopping at a stop sign on a bike kinda sucks.

Some people feel that same way when they are in a car, at least in my neighborhood.

Bicyclists are the worst...
Do you realize how many drivers kill people every day? I see dumb **** everyday from drivers ranging from driving drunk to texting to running stop signs, red lights.... Educate yourself and stop using a broad brush when addressing something you dont even understand.

I was always taught pedestrians have the right of way (and that includes bikes).

But while at ISU I got pulled over riding my bike by a bike cop on Welch for not stopping at a stop sign. The convo went like this:

Cop: i need to see your drivers license.

Me: You're joking right, I'm on a bike and don't have it with me.

Cop: No I'm not joking you didn't stop at that stop sign back there.

Me: I didn't know I needed to there were no cars around.

Cop: Yes you needed to stop.

Me: Then just give me a ticket so I can get to class.

Cop: I'll let you go this time but you need to stop at stop signs, register your bike with the City of Ames and don't ride on the sidewalk.

Me: Ok
A stop sign is a STOP sign, no matter the mode of transportation. It's crazy to me to think bikers don't need to stop at stop signs, ESPECIALLY when they are biking on the road. I would like to see a cop's reaction if I blow through a stop sign with my car and tell him, "I didn't stop because there were no other cars around". lol

Iowa needs the Idaho stop. Its safer for everyone and doesn't slow down traffic. It has merits.

Bicyclists are the worst...
I don't know about the worst, but most have huge nads. Even the gals. Kind of an "entitled" roadway opinion .... which the law grants them, but come on.
And then there's the distance cyclists that ride on 2 lane highway, about a foot inside the white line as there's no shoulder. See it every day on may way to work. I don't know how this guy survives long term with all the distracted drivers. Just a small red blinking light to alert drivers. I'd have a freaking strobe light pointing behind me!
