Any chance on Iowa State canceling this afternoon? Please real responses and no "Iowa State never cancels" Because the did last year on a rainy day that never turned icy.
Chance that all of Iowa State will cancel today, 1%. But some classes, especially night classes will probably be cancelled.

Probably not. Things won't get worse until tonight when the winds pick up. I wouldn't expect any major problems in town other than some drifts on the roads. Visibility out in the country will be pretty bad though.

On a side note, when did Iowa State cancel classes last year? I'm a grad student and don't remember that. I just remember when classes were cancelled in spring 2007.

This crap needs to stop NOW. Everytime they make any progress on my house a storm hits and the builders go home. Arrghh! :arghh:

Builders go home when it's too nice of a day to work, hunting season is open, . . .

Does anybody else picture La Nina as a hot Latino chick? I like to picture her as Selma Hayek.

I like to think of La Nina as one of the chicks on Univision. Sure, you have no idea what they are saying, but you watch anyway.

I'm hoping that NWS is right, and I get a small window between snow slowing down and winds picking up to clean driveway.

I'm not sure I understand your logic. Why would you be concerned about clearing your driveway when 40 mph winds are going to instantly drift it back shut?

My unprofessional advice would be to make yourself a cup of hot chocolate, sit back, and let nature do what it is going to do.

Because work will not cancel tomorrow, and that gives me 4 less inches to shovel in the morning, esp when I shovel it to the south side of my driveway.

That was spring 2007 and they canceled all classes after 3pm and storm didn't hit until late. Next morning when I35 was closed, they didn't cancel anything claiming most students leave in Ames and can make it to class. As a commuter student, I was never so ticked in my life.

Yeah that was a joke. I missed one class, which was already cancelled because the prof lived in DSM, and she cancelled before the university said "boo". Not a true cancellation, imo.

If we get 50 mph wind gusts with the snow we get today on top of what we had Saturday, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you move the snow tonight and if you didn't. Unless the storm is barking louder then it will bite, then you did some good......

Waukee and West Des Moines schools are closing 2 hours early today. Got an email about 9:20am

I'll preface this by saying I'm not in Iowa right now to witness how bad or not bad it is?

But are they really closing schools and calling this a blizzard for 3-5 inches of snow???

I grew up in MN and the only times we would get a snow day was when you would get an inch of ice followed by 8-10 inches of snow between midnight and 6am, so they didn't have time to clear the roads.

It's not the snow as much as the winds that are coming afterward. I'm not looking forward to the drive home along I-35

Right now its 28 degrees in Des Moines. Sometime after dinner, a cold front is supposed to come through changing wind direction to from the north and temps are supposed to drop like a rock. Low for today is supposed to be -4. Winds 25-35 mph and gusts up to 50mph adding windchill to the -4. 5"of snow Saturday and another 3-5" today will make things pretty hazardous in a hurry. Last night they were saying th blizzard warning was to start at noon today and now it sounds like later this afternoon.

Especially true for the rural schools. If it's not safe the busses to be out, school will be cancelled.

It has as much to do existing snow as expected snowfall. We've had two good snowfalls in the last 5 days in fort dodge. The roads are already crap. now add 3-5 plus wind.

I don't know what the hell is going on in Fort Dodge, but I'm just going to guess that they have completely given up on clearing the roads there. I saw essentially no clearing of the roads - even the main ones - 24 hours after the last snow fall. It was absolutely pathetic.
