When the new soccer stadium gets built in DSM I bet they push to move it there, outside, where every other HS game occurs.

There are a lot of politics involved with moving any event to Des Moines when it is not already in Des Moines. Lots of people outside the metro who would try to stop it. So I doubt this. If they want more venues, they have Kinnick and Jack Trice as very suitable options that high schoolers would really enjoy playing in.

Most states around Iowa play all of their games outside anyway.

Illinois, Nebraska, and Wisconsin don't even have the option to play indoors.
Minnesota and South Dakota play inside.
Missouri played inside for a long time, but moved out of the dome to Columbia a few years ago.

They do, but it's brutal. Watched the Wisconsin HS games at Camp Randall yesterday. Place looked completely empty, no environment with 25-30 mph winds with a high of 30 yesterday. No thanks.

Are you telling me that people in Iowa that were outside watching games two weeks ago wouldn’t watch a game outside now? What’s the difference?

The big problem with moving to Trice and Kinnick , besides scheduling and weather (I'm not sure Iowa and Iowa State are willing to give up all possibilities of having a home game on that weekend like UNI is) is that you'll have no atmosphere. The 4A title game probably had 6000 people last night. That's just empty sadness in Trice or Kinnick.

And there's no way in hell the ISU turf crew would agree to it.

Lots of Gmas, Gpas, young kiddos, etc. go to these games in the Dome to support family members playing/cheering. Playing them outdoors in frigid temps and winds would probably make it not possible for many of them to attend. Just one thought.

This is why I mentioned the new soccer stadium in Des Moines. The amenities in that area are great as well and improving all of the time. It would be a home run.

As I noted, they all went to games outside in the middle of a corn field two weeks ago. Why wouldn’t they go to an enclosed stadium now?

Some did but maybe some didn't. I know a few Van Meter families where the grandparents didn't go to the quarterfinals but did go to the games at the Dome.

After close to 50 years, playing football in the dome has probably lost some of its novelty. But I still think Cedar Falls and the dome are the best place for the HS playoffs.

Just a matter of how UNI, the state, Waterloo/Cedar Falls and Association go about making it a showcase facility

When did the playoffs go to the dome?

Interesting. Since they expanded to seven classes, which means 14 semifinal games instead of the old 12, I wondered if IHSAA would consider splitting across multiple sites moving forward. They could have done something like 8/A/2A/4A at Jack Trice and 1A/3A/5A at Kinnick, and then switch the next year (or they could keep the Dome in this rotation, too, and use 2 of the 3 stadiums each year). That would have allowed them to play all of the semifinals in two days instead of four. But, it sounds like they are committing now to keep everything at the Dome moving forward.

I think the dome is a better atmosphere for a high school game with 3-7k people in attendance. Hope they keep it there for the foreseeable future and hopefully the Dome makes improvements.

Without improvements, the dome is such a sad, sad facility. Like there’s not reason for the crappy shape and the way it operates/looks both inside and out. If they can’t fix it, then alternatives are necessary to look at.
