Couldn't that same argument have been made between ISU and OU prior to 2017? Things can change quickly if the right person is put in charge. My $0.02.
ANYONE can have a devastating bad year (PSU almost did last year). I think it should be based on 4-5 year run. If a team has 4 bad years in a row, relegation may get the team some wins/confidence to compete back at the higher level.
Although, Iowa State's worst 4 year run in history was 1994-1997 (6-37-1), yet 3 years later we win 9 games including a bowl.

Amazon is a $1.65 Trillion dollar company, with $100 billion of revenue each of the last 3 quarters and $90 billion in cash

Disney is a $319 billion dollar company with $16 billion in Q2.2021 revenue and $16 billion in cash

You are 100% right that Disney is really getting aggressive before these tech and media companies want to come swim in the live sports broadcasting pool. Once they arrive.. ESPN can no longer compete at that level

I would say "if" Amazon wants to aggressively climb into the sports media business, but a person can buy everything from food to butt plugs on that platform

So bring on Amazon!!

They blew away the competition to the tune of $1 billion a year for the Thursday night NFL game.. High growth companies need growth to sustain their stock prices and CEO compensation.

Maybe the most important Tweet in realignment so far:

This is why ESPN is trying to ramrod things so much right now.

This is very big... I think we all suspected that Amazon and possibly Netflix would get into live sports but the timing is very good for the Irate 8 in my mind. This will help coax ESPN/Fox/NBC/CBS's to the table now to get the conferences BOR locked up and will want as much content as possible before Amazon Live Sports can get a foot hold. This could easily result in conference expansion now as opposed to waiting for media rights to end and then evaluate.
If for some reason some or all the Irate 8 schools are left out of the new P4/5 conferences and forced to join the next best conference Amazon Live Sports will have a blank check and platform to promote a new league to keep these teams relevant and at the current AD spending. Having a new rich fall back option could be the soft landing ISU would need to keep relevant until the Super 64 conference happens.

Imagine Amazon contacts the Angry 8 and offers a deal of $80 million per ( to get in the game)..... Now all of a sudden we have suitors wanting IN the conference and ESPN with limited sources playing 2nd fiddle before dropping out eventually. Or course we tell OuT not a chance in hell you are getting back in.

As a customer and fan, the more competition the better, particularly where we (K-State not ISU) stand today peering over eternity's edge. Someone needs to validate the other strong programs around the country, beyond the blue bloods, their hangers-on, and wannabees. That could start with Amazon and the motley-8, it seems to me.

That really doesn't sound very Amazon-like. Overpay for a lower value product? I doubt it. Would they potentially pick up the B12 leftovers? Maybe. Even that's not certain - so far they've showed no interest in picking up college sports. They are focusing on the biggest dollar franchises so far in the NFL and the Yankees.

But say they do get into NCAAF broadcasting and want to pick up the remaining B12 schools - they'd pick up the rights at a bargain rate or not at all. That's what Amazon does. Amazon is not exactly known for putting out high quality and high cost media or any other products. They're known for putting things out that are cheap and easy to get while squeezing out every penny of profit.

The "Your game, your way" slogan from that article from Amazon is super interesting from a development standpoint. It makes me wonder if they do invest in college athletics, they'll have it set up for schools to do their own broadcast and have it on their streams. So if ISU and TCU are playing you could watch a dedicated ISU or dedicated TCU broadcast. Bigger games might have a neutral commentary team. That would keep their overheads down but maintain their game inventory.

Or Amazon buys all of a conferences media rights, could they sell individual games back to ESPN/Fox/CBS. That way ESPN/Fox/CBS doesn't need to do a huge contract to get a Saturday afternoon game but could in theory pay for just the premier matchups they want.

I don't think Amazon got where they are by overpaying for things.

Rumor: TCU to the SEC?

Greg Swaim (sports media kook in Oklahoma) says the SEC’s response to the B1G/Pac/ACC alliance is planned to add TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, and likely Oklahoma State to “lock down Texas” and expand to 20 schools.

There is no reason to believe him but this would be pretty disastrous for Iowa State if somehow he is right. Depending on how strong that “alliance” is.

Not to be snarky, but who doesn't? I've seen quality drop across the board over my lifetime in favor of greater margins. And not everything Amazon is cheap. Try equaling their delivery model.

I’d argue the other way and say it’d be a positive for us.

Gah, just another hack taking a swing at a spitball. Hell, Randy Peterson could post an article on Iowa State going to the BIG and it would hit the national wires in about 5 seconds.

Why would the SEC want either of the religious schools...TCU and Baylor...especially Baylor.
