I think it is. But maybe we should start with the coaching pool...I bet it’s a lot more limited than we think. Especially with our unwillingness to open the checkbook.

I know you are anti-TJ which realistic candidates are so much better? With our pool, there are going to be cons with anyone we hire.

To me, we could do better than TJ and we could do worse. But if Pollard is going to pay $2-$2.3 million, who else is significantly better?

I like Craig Smith. But there are certainly more appealing places looking for a Coach that are a better situation for him than us. More of a Minnesota guy probably. It is going to be a Mid Major Coach IMO. They are all a crap shoot.

Personally I think MN takes Dutcher or Medved before Smith. We'll see what happens.

Iowa State fans wanted to run McDermott out of town, and now he's a consistent winner at Creighton.

Iowa fans wanted Fran gone at one point, now they're a 2 seed. Fan's emotions aren't always the most reliable.

These are really bad examples of the fans being wrong.

I don't know. I just said that I am not excited about any of the realistic or non-realistic candidates.

Greg McDermott completely changed his playbook and willingness to let players be free.
Fran got a once in a lifetime player whose dad worked him out like crazy during the offseason.

Greg also benefited greatly from Doug helping him establish his culture, while being back in the Missouri Valley.

That doesn’t work as well as Year 5 in the Big 12 after four years of toxicity

That’s likely false.

But where it becomes alluring is if he can deliver a good roster right away. For TJ to be hired, it needs to be effectively known he retains Hunter, Nunn, Bolton, Foster, Hinson, and brings Nunn’s teammate, maybe even a guy like Hamilton. The assistants he will bring need to wow, and bring a quality player or two.

Compare that to a coach that has to start over and is looking at Year 2 or Year 3 before they have a full roster, and TJ becomes more appealing even if having a resume that doesn’t suggest upper half of the conference

Since TJ is currently the coach at UNLV there is no way for that to happen. Who returns to the ISU roster, what ISU recruits remain committed (hopefully) can't be known until after a new coach is hired.

Also, Hamilton is basically a clone of Bolton. Not sure that makes sense when the biggest fan complaints are lack of PG play, better 3 point shooting and more ball movement.

Yes he has but his schemes are so different.
Diante was handcuffed for three years under him and would thrive under him at Creighton today.

McDermott has been successful everywhere but ISU. So which one is not like the other?
People forget the MoValley was a multi bid league frequently when he was at UNI. He got two at larges while going 11-7 in conference.

Effectively known, I said.

I’m not sure if you follow college basketball, but if you don’t, let’s put to this way, a guy with TJs ties to ISU and Wisconsin will have no trouble knowing his chances of retaining those guys. I mean, that’s a big part of why the familiarity is a benefit. It’s not likely to be a Greg taking over for Wayne situation. And he would obviously know which of his recruits and players he could bring.

Yes, that’s why I said “also”...aka in addition to. Both aspects mattered
