From a Las Vegas sportswriter, wondering about the direction of the Rebel program, and apparently confused about the attention Otzelberger is getting here:

"Turnover is coming and it might not end with the players. Otzelberger has already been linked to what is expected to be an opening at Iowa State. I understand there are other factors to sell in Big 12 country regarding him than his time at UNLV.

There better be."

It's not the most important thing, but we won't exactly be impressing the country when we hire him.

So Prohms sweet 16 appearance, 3 NCAA bids, and Big12 tournament championships hurt his resume? Interesting
Prohm couldn’t even get hired at Murray State right now. At least I wouldn’t if I were them.
I was shocked at the way the jackals came at me when I suggested his success at SDSU is hard to judge because of how dominant Daum was in a small conference. I didn't even dismiss it, just said it was hard to measure.

I thought I was posting a boring obvious post...I might as well have posted that Grayer couldn't dunk well.
That may partially be because there are a bunch of morons who hate TJ.

I would agree that TJs time at SDSU is a bit hard to grade because of Daum. Personally I don’t think Daum was as big of a factor as others because he didn’t even really get a look in the NBA. Great college player but I think TJ put him in positions to succeed vs he was the reason TJ succeeded.
This is just a much bigger hire in terms of getting it right than it was when Fred left. I think a more credible case for TJ could have been made post-Hoiberg than this time. Pollard can't mess this one up, the stakes are higher with the program where it is.
This is a much lower stakes hire than when Prohm was hired. When Fred left that was about as high stakes as you get. We had a lot of momentum and talent. You wanted to really take advantage of the situation and utilize those first teams into a great start. Now we have to rebuild and it’s going to take time. If it doesn’t work out it’s not going to be worse. It likely won’t even be this bad. I’m not sure how this hire is even close to as high of stakes as the previous one.

No one hates TJ. Lots of people think he doesnt have a resume for this caliber of opening. Anyone objective should be able to see that.

Disagree. We've cratered the program. We have a chance to make that a few-year fluke and bring things back, or we could end up making it clear that, aside from a few nice years thanks to Fred, this program is a bottom feeder.

Here is an article On UNLV Identity.

You do realize that article was from Jan 2020 and basically a Mountain West Conference promo piece. It was less than 2 months into TJ's tenure as UNLV, still in honeymoon mode with the media.

If you read articles from the 2020/21 season there are a lot of questions on the direction of the UNLV program going into year 3. UNLV could go into 2021/22 with Caleb Grill as its best returning player if Jenkins, Hamilton and Diong don't return.

Below is LV Sun article from today. The honeymoon is over.

Fred got some great players in George’s, Naz, Monte, Naz, etc. Maybe if we knew who recruited those guys. He might be worth a look.

Bingo. But no coach is a slam dunk. Nobody.

For sure. But there are a segment of people that act like TJ is.

I honestly don't know who I'd pick. Not one of the realistic or even unrealistic picks really excites me.

Lol most UNLV fans want to run TJ out of town, and Iowa State fans say “pick him up!”
Iowa State fans wanted to run McDermott out of town, and now he's a consistent winner at Creighton.

Iowa fans wanted Fran gone at one point, now they're a 2 seed. Fan's emotions aren't always the most reliable.

Generally speaking, fans are clueless. To put it nicely.

TJs resumes will probably be as good as anybody we are looking at.
That’s likely false.

But where it becomes alluring is if he can deliver a good roster right away. For TJ to be hired, it needs to be effectively known he retains Hunter, Nunn, Bolton, Foster, Hinson, and brings Nunn’s teammate, maybe even a guy like Hamilton. The assistants he will bring need to wow, and bring a quality player or two.

Compare that to a coach that has to start over and is looking at Year 2 or Year 3 before they have a full roster, and TJ becomes more appealing even if having a resume that doesn’t suggest upper half of the conference

I love TJ, he’s been a great recruiter/assistant coach at Iowa State. Prohm has been a great recruiter/tries to do the assistant coaches jobs at Iowa State because he hired bad ones and for whatever reason never upgraded.

I don’t want Prohm here, and I don’t want TJ who seems weirdly similar.

I’m an Iowa State fan first, so I’d initially support TJ even though he’s not near my top targets. But like Prohm, I’d give him a shot and some leash until it reaches the point we are obviously better off without him.

And here we go. Do we need to rehash this again? So the players did it all on their own? What, with Fred, or wait..............TJ..........we have final four banners hanging in Hilton? My only point was that even after two terrible back to back years.......his overall is still better than a coach JP didn't fire. Didn't fire! That is pertinent to this conversation. I doubt JP is sitting back thinking what you just said.
It's not that Prohm did nothing those two years, its that every other coach could have done at least that well. Relative to college coaches, he did nothing.

I would think most educated fan bases would open up wikipedia look at the last 2 years of record and be like no thanks

Chizik to Auburn after 5 wins in two years was a head scratcher and I'm sure their base was irate

You’re lying and everyone knows it.

I like Craig Smith. But there are certainly more appealing places looking for a Coach that are a better situation for him than us. More of a Minnesota guy probably. It is going to be a Mid Major Coach IMO. They are all a crap shoot.
