When Dan started coaching at Iowa State. The Facilities were way way worse than Kansas has now. The locker rooms were borderline high school. It was embarrassing. I still say Dan did one of the best coaching jobs ever to get us to a bowl game. I know he won't go down as the best coach ever. However, looking what him, Walden, and Criner had to deal with, it was like trying to compete with Apple by selling computers out of your garage.
This is only true if you are talking about a 100+ year old garage that was built only large enough to hold a Model T.

How can they possibly break even in football? Just scholarships alone.
Ku, like the rest of the conference schools, gets an equal share of TV money from the B12 contract. That's applied against $29 million in football expenses.

After 13 seasons of consecutive increases in conference revenue, the Big 12 Conference is reporting a decline for 2019-2020. The Dallas Morning News' Chuck Carlton was the first to report on the 2019-2020 revenue distribution for the Big 12. Each of the 10 schools in the conference will receive about $37.7 million.May 29, 2020. Dallas Morning News

They should just fold. Such a desperate program. Go the Iowa State baseball route, and stick to what you're good at/what you can actually succeed at. For them, it ain't football. We can't be the Big 9 after they leave, so we could add Notre Dame as a football-only member.

There has to be a few influential KU boosters and someone in a corner office of the KU athletic department that have considered cancelling football instead of getting embarrassed every year. Maybe even go to a lower level and play in the Missouri Valley. Yes they are getting TV revenue but the football program is perennially horrible. Or hire back Mangino.

They aren't considering cancelling football if they want to remain in the Big XII in other sports.

They're not dropping football.

They're not going to do anything that might jeopardize their viability in the Big 12.

They're pretty secure with their marquis basketball program, but if they were suddenly just a basketball school, they become a much better fit in something like the Big East than the Big 12.

Lot more money and prestige being in the Big 12 than the Big East or the American.

Mangino's reputation is greatly embellished by j'hawks. He was 23-41 in conference play and had one winning season in eight years of B12 play. He started 0-8 his first year and finished his last season at 1-7.

Besides that, he was a complete jerk. He is often thought of as a legend by the birds, but that's only a reflection of his coaching at Ku. After he left, Ku won a total of 15 games over the next 8 years.

They are required to have football if they are in the Big 12.

The conference requires members to have a minimum of six men's sports (football and MBB are required) and six women's sports (WBB and either volleyball or soccer are required, and members who have volleyball and/or soccer can't drop them even if they have both).

This just serves to remind me that the Big 12 only has nine volleyball programs.

I never quite figured out why Oklahoma State doesn't have it.

That's just one of those basic sports you assume every college has. Of course, you could say the same thing about baseball.

Now don't start that again. :p

You at least have a plausible case with Iowa State and baseball that being the northern outpost in a conference made up of southerly schools is not viable. But gyms are 72° everywhere, including Stillwater, Oklahoma.

They don't want to drill holes in the Gallagher-Iba court.

Greg McDermott might get fired for one dumb statement that he immediately owned and apologized for. I don't think anybody is saying there is a track record of insensitivity or bad behavior there.

Les Miles acted like a total creep to young women employed directly or indirectly by him. Sounds like it wasn't exactly an isolated incident, too, or at least it usually isn't with guys like him.

McDermott getting fired for this yet Miles surviving is going to be some ultimate proof life isn't fair.

Not sure there is much incentive for KU to take the heat necessary to keep the guy. It would be different if the program was any good. They can lose games just as well without Miles, might as well cut him loose.

Not only that but his Orange bowl season he got really lucky and avoided most of the top teams. He tried to mess up CRP and take over the head coach job eventually. I thought he was the best hire Paul made and it turned out to be the worst hire made.
