if this is still just being done by the enrollment #'s instead of actual player numbers the Des Moines schools are still going to struggle mightily vs the suburban schools still.
I think you have to figure out some other way to do it. I also think you need to figure out how to handle the big schools. There’s just to big of a money and size discrepancy on the top schools.

Cr jeff struggles with this too in football. They had a similar enrollment to Wash but would field 40% the players. We'd kick the **** out of them

For 5A and 4A model it off of soccers promotion and relegation. Maybe make the 5A class a little smaller.

For reference, here are the enrollment numbers used for the 2020-21 school year classifications. Note that they only use enrollment for grades 9-11, which is what's listed.

If last years numbers were used for this year's class breakdown the size of schools in each class would be:
5A 2267-955
4A 929-397
3A 392-301
2A 300-205
1A 204-163
A & 8P 161-9

Still really big spreads in 5A and 4A but 3A-1A are pretty reasonable.

If Waukee is splitting as has been presented here 5A spread won't be quite as bad but ~2200-975 is still a pretty big spread.

Coaches would line up to game the system if it were based on participation numbers.

Uh, yeah, we only have....uh....37 guys on the varsity. Pay no attention to the 65-man JV roster.

I know there is no great way to do this but how the hell is a place like Ottumwa supposed to be able to keep pace with schools like Waukee(s), Valley, Ankeny(s) (have heard the 3rd HS is already in the works there even). I'm sure some of the schools that will now be 4A put more players on the field then Ottumwa does year after year and would probably have more success even in a larger class.

this is where the real issue lies, the teams that will continue to struggle won't get any better now. they will just continue to be the whipping boys in the new large class and drive numbers down even more.

929-397 for 4A seems pretty ridiculous.

I don't think I will tell my brother whose teams years ago just missed the playoffs because of one thorn-in-their-side team that said school is now 3 classes above his old school.

then you just use total #s out for freshmen-varsity, not how many are out for each individual team. I mean we pulled freshmen up every once and a while even at Ankeny, Lanning was a freshman when he started varsity my junior year.
