Football adds classification, playoff qualifiers
The Board of Control approved and accepted the lone recommendation out of recent meetings of the joint IHSAA and IGHSAU classification committee, adding one classification of football ahead of the 2021 season.
The new classification will be Class 5A, adding an 11-player group to reduce the disparity in enrollment in the IHSAA’s largest class of football, and to increase the number of participating teams and student-athletes in the postseason.
The board approved separate scheduling and playoff plans across the seven football classifications:
Class 5A, Class 4A, Class 3A: 36 teams, 9 regular season games, 16 playoff qualifiers.
Class 2A, Class 1A: 48 teams, 8 regular season games, 32 playoff qualifiers.
Class A: Remainder of 11-player teams, 8 regular season games, 32 playoff qualifiers.
Eight-Player: All 8-player teams, 8 regular season games, 32 playoff qualifiers.
Teams in 2A, 1A, A, and 8P will be permitted to play a ninth regular season contest should they not qualify for the postseason.
Additional information regarding playoff qualification and district assignments will be released at a later date.
The trick is going to be figuring out a schedule for semis and finals in the Dome.
Semifinal weekend is already packed full with 4 games Thursday, Friday and Saturday. May have to bump the two 8-man games up to Wednesday night.
Finals weekend will have to go 3 on Thursday/4 on Friday, or the opposite.

Should make all parochial schools bump up a class now in football.
Xavier will fight that they like beating up on lesser competition
This is something I’d like to know. I’m doubtful but I hope Urbandale is 4A. Iowa is weird I think in our school breakdown. There’s a lot of variance on the top end. I just want to get away from Valley and Dowling.
Based on this year's numbers, Xavier would be in the new 4A with Waverly-SR, DC-G, North Scott, Western Dubuque and Lewis Central.
If you have a list of all schools ordered by enrollment take the top 36 teams for 5A.

The Waukee split should bump everyone down one space. Then you'd still need help from CBTJ and Ottumwa.

For reference, here are the enrollment numbers used for the 2020-21 school year classifications. Note that they only use enrollment for grades 9-11, which is what's listed.
Don't some other states do that? I think Illinois does or at least they use to.
