Have we learned how ro win on the road ? From 1985-1994, our conference road record looks like it was 12-58. Can that possibly be right ? What does it take to win Big 12 games on the road ?

Yes, Johnny had them rockin' in Hilton, not so much on the road.
Was probably lucky that tv options weren't as great back then. The road games probably weren't as well viewed.

We were rarely on TV, it was tough to get radio some games and road games usually weren't worth it. That is why I never missed a home game for six years. Pretty much only chance to watch them was in person at home.

Johnny: .163 (16-82); best year was 2-5
Colorado - 5
Nebraska - 3
Oklahoma - 2
Kansas State - 2
Oklahoma State - 2
Missouri - 1
Kansas - 1

Tim: .333 (10-20)
Larry: .300 (12-28)
Wayne: .250 (6-18)
Greg: .125 (4-28)
Fred: .318 (14-30)
Steve: .255 (12-35)

Road teams in the Big 12 have won, on average, about 1/3 of the time. Floyd was the only one to reach that mark, but his 2 years in the Big 12 he was 4-12 (.250).

I do believe in Hilton Magic but it really started because of Orr's pathetic performance on the road. If you took the two games in a given year vs a given opponent our home court advantage looked huge.

Good teams win at home, great teams win on the road. We have had a lot of good teams since the beginning of the Orr era, but very few great teams.

Pretty sure Johnny made the tourney one year when all the wins were at home and all the loses were on the road. That was the famous "and we kicked your ass" year when talking to **** Vitale. **** was arguing we should not make it because of that. Johnny won that war of words. haha

I see why the administration "fired" Johnny.

He did great things, even though he didn't win.

Too bad the Veisha jerks disrepected him. Those drunks !!!

That was 1991-92. Largely win-at-home, lose-away, but not entirely.

The following summary strays from your point, it’s mainly to show how clueless Vitale was. ISU's schedule was a minefield that season ... performance within that context is why we got in over JMU, despite being 5-9 in Big 8.

(Parentheses: NCAA tournament seeding of opponent)

True road wins: at Minnesota, at Drake.
Neutral court losses in regular season: (3) UMass, TCU
Losses at Hilton: (5) Missouri, (9) Nebraska.
Wins at home vs. tournament teams: (1) KU, (2) Oklahoma State, (4) Oklahoma, (9) Iowa.
Big 8 Tournament: 1-1: W (5) Missouri, L (2) Oklahoma State.

(Also, K-State, Minnesota and TCU made NIT)

Our Administration couldn’t figure it out back then. Meanwhile in places like Miami and Madison Donna Shalala figured out the football programs were the front door to the university.

Obviously, it takes talented players and a well constructed roster that can win when shots aren't falling.

But the reality is, the formula for winning on the road (and home) is schematically pretty simple:
  • Defense
  • Rebounding
  • Paint Points
  • Making More Free Throws than the Opponent Attempts
Johnny's teams were fun to watch, but they didn't play much defense and relied on jump shooting. So when shots didn't fall - his teams struggled to win. We just always seemed to shoot a lot better at Hilton and I'm sure a big reason is fan support.

Prohm's teams remind me a lot of Johnny's teams. We just don't have the same elite talent (top 2-3 players) and top 8/9 depth on the roster the last 2 years.
