Purely anecdotal and just one person, but I was talking to a higher up before a conference call started at work. He’s a Michigan grad and a donor. I jokingly said, yeah, there’s rumors your school might go after my school’s coach if they get rid of Harbaugh. He said Campbell is a good coach, but he and his friends he talks with that are donors still like Harbaugh and think the price tag too buy him out right now isn’t worth what they’d get in return with a coaching change. Said if Harbaugh decides to leave on his own, no one would hold him back, but there isn’t much of an appetite (amongst his group of friends at least) to pay for a buyout.

Again, PURELY anecdotal.

Edit: he also specifically talked about Campbell not being a Michigan Man.

Not that it matters in these searches but go look at Twitter at national media’s tweets about Campbell to Michigan and see how many UM fans REALLY don’t want Campbell.

Not sure why Heacock would leave for South Carolina. Is there a connection between the two? Otherwise, why go to SC where it's very likely the coach won't be there more than 3-4 years anyways?

Money is likely the only reason. Heacock is making $650k. South Carolina DC made $1.2 million. That’s a BIG jump.

The whole reason CMC left Toledo was because he wanted to build something special. He literally said he thought he could mold Toledo into the next Boise State.

Jamie sold him on the vision that he could do that exact same thing at Iowa State, a place with a foundation, with better resources than Toledo—but zero existing culture or tradition.

And then Jamie gave Matt Campbell the keys to build something special.

What people don’t get is that CMC wouldn’t have that same opportunity at a Michigan, a Notre Dame or an Ohio State. Sure, he could build or maintain those places at their longtime glory, but there the only achievable goal would be to become the next face on that school’s coaching Mount Rushmore.

Here, CMC is the architect, the founder. Not just another face, but hopefully the first face.

I honestly think the only way he leaves is A, for some reason he discovers that he can’t get the job done here, that he doesn’t have the needed resources, or B, he scales the mountain, and is ready for another challenge.

Personally, I don’t see that first condition happening any time soon—if it does. The second one? If CMC moves on after a national Championship or two, I promise not to complain.

Er, too much.

Now, where else could Matt Campbell find another P5 place with better resources than ISU, but zero tradition? Hint: there really isn’t one.

Go Cyclones!
Couldn't tell you about their resources but if we're talking about less tradition, Vandy's coaching job just came open...

If it came down to money - which I don't think it will for Heacock at his age - I have no doubt that Pollard and Campbell would work together to pay him enough to stay. They both recognize how critical he has been to the success of Iowa State Football.

When was the last time Michigan even had a decent coach? Lloyd Carr? Much like Nebraska, that program is such a dumpster fire they can't even remember what talent and success look like. I hope they keep getting burned.

Moreso if Heacock was going to leave for $1 million it probably would’ve happened already. If Alex Grinch is getting $1.4 somebody would’ve already shelled out big money for Heacock.

So we’re pretending like Harbaugh isn’t a decent coach?

He went 29-6 at SDSU, turned around a dumpster fire in Stanford and went 12-1 his last season there, took the 49ers to a Super Bowl and NFC championship game after re-building that dumpster fire, then went to Michigan where, before this season, he’s had 3 10 win seasons, a 9 win season and an 8 win season. Are we just ignoring his entire body of work and only looking at this season so we can say he’s not a good coach?

Yea and Michigan has done alright under him. Not their expectations obviously but whatever. He's won 10 games 4 times, 9 games, and 8 games. Then whatever this year ends up being.

The big issue is that he hasn't beat Ohio State.

Which is fine. And there are a lot of things about Harbaugh not to like. But to call him not a decent coach is just insanity.

What's pretty sad is how untrue your statement is. Not being further north, but Detroit is actually warmer than Des Moines in the winter.

Or Michigan St. Or Penn St. Harbaugh is currently 1-6 against OSU and MSU (and likely will be 1-7 is the OSU game is played). Yeah, Michigan has done “all right” under Harbaugh - if Michigan was a school like Indiana or Purdue. Saying what has gone on under Harbaugh is a total goal post move, considering he was hired to beat his rivals, win Big 10 championships, and play in major bowl games/playoff games.

I don’t have any inside info or knowledge but I I don’t see notre dame being open anytime soon but out of those four, that seems like the most likely place he’d want to go.
Wanting and being offered are two different things. When the OSU job was opened, Matt didn't even get a sniff.

Defense mechanism, got really bad after Fred. Although, Prohm's recruiting is dynamite, so that seems to be somewhat working out.

For sure, it’s all a defensive mechanism for fans.
Not all fans. I look at it like this. All things come to an end. Nothing you or I can do about it.

Would you rather have this era of ISU football come to an end because our coach got poached or because our coach got fired? To try yet again to find that coach who will put us on the map, or to look for the coach who will keep the success going?

Easy choice for me, and that’s no defense mechanism.
