I have been tempted to try one of these courses, but am afraid they are a total scam. Has anyone tried a speed reading course?

yes its real. it involves bypassing your trachea in the reasing process, trying to read with your brain. brain = faster than throat.

Any specific experience or recommendation?

Uh well I remember when I took it at the local college, the first exercise they had us do was read blocks of text while counting to four consecutively. I think the average person reads 200-300 words per minute, but if you are able to bypass using your throat (subconsiously) you can get up to 1000 wpm.
