Future Non-Con Opponents, and traveling to G5 Schools

Got bored today, and decided to look at our future non conference opponents here. A few things stood out to me. First, why do we continue playing UNI? Even though we get a break from them in 24/25, I am sure we will play them in the following years. Everyone knows when UNI plays at Iowa State, its their super bowl. No under recruited player from small town Iowa wants anything more than to beat one of the big boys. We already have to deal with a team playing their super bowl by playing Iowa, why do we subject ourselves to it twice a year?
Second, why do we continue scheduling road games at G5 schools? I get destination trips (UNLV and Tulane), but at Ohio and at Bowling Green? Not to mention we've traveled to Tulsa and Akron in recent memory as well. I don't think there is another Power 5 school that travels to G5 schools as much as we do, and in my opinion it is something we just shouldn't do. I'm all for "buying wins", but most schools at least get a 2 for 1 deal and we can't even seem to do that.

I think you need to do more research on what other P5 schools are doing.

As for playing at Ohio and at Bowling Green, take a look at where the coaching staff comes from and where they like to recruit.

There were also several 2-for-1s and home/home arrangements that got dumped as a result of realignment and losing a non-conference game from the schedule.

B12 is never going to make the money that the B10 or SEC do. That's just the way it is with the population base in those parts of the country. If we want to continue to pay our coaches at a high level and build top notch facilities, playing a road game every other year at a G5 school (of our choosing) is not the worst trade off.

I do agree on UNI. If we are going to play a 1AA school, I'd rather find the worst one out there and not an in-state one with an a-hole coach. Get the starters some early action to knock the rust off and then see how the backups do.

I agree with the UNI part. I’m not sure if I’m the only one but I expect our starters to play half those games and let the backups get some time and it literally never happens. We couldn’t even do that against fricken Drake.

When is the last time TOE played a road non-con game, other than ISU?

Dump UNI...bring in a variety of other similar level teams. Keep the destination away games...great opportunity to travel during a decent time of year. As stated, Vegas and New Orleans are nice places to visit for a long week-end!

Hate to break it but UNI is not going away from ISU or Iowa's schedules as long as UNI fields a scholarship team. The payday from ISU and Iowa is needed for UNI's athletic budget and the regents will always force their hands.

Not exactly sure.
Also UNI is a cheap team to bring in. We bring in a farther team and we probably have to pay close to a million for them. UNI is 400-500k to get.

That’s all OL. Good teams with good OLs grind lower level teams into submission. ISU has had about 4 decent OLs in the last 20 years. The rest ranged from below average to horrible. When you can’t impose your will on the line of scrimmage, you give teams like UNI a chance to stay in the game. Unfortunately, nothing is going to change until they can start beating iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Missouri for OL recruits. Because so far under Campbell (and before), we’ve been taking the scraps from those teams.

Downing, Ramos and Newell were scraps?
