Sorry, but when I read this, I heard it in my mind with a Ron Burgundy BS voice!

So you are saying we might have janky light bulbs? Hard to imagine that Musco wasn't on top of what was the very best for us.
Believe what you want.

First of all, not many LED fixtures that you would install in an arena have bulbs. And when we were testing fixtures for our project Musco was not at the top of the performance list. They have been doing event lighting for a long time but when we did our project and when Hilton was being relit pretty much everyone in the industry was trying to perfect an LED version of their lights; some with better success than others.

Lighting and this coaching staff piling up the home losses are the 2 major reasons. I completely agree, I've been to games every year, its just not the same atmosphere anymore.
Piling up the home losses? Is it 3 this year or something like that?

and it has a lot to do with the lighting...

Supposedly they changed the light fixtures idk like few years ago? And that affects upper deck lighting..well it sucks...it is like sitting in a morgue.

I can’t believe others in the AD and b-ball program haven’t noticed and asked for a change.

Hilton has changed and it isn’t good. The once magical arena isn’t all that intimidating to opponents when 2/3 of the place is in the dark.

This is dumb as shite.

No doubt you know what you are talking about from a technical perspective. It was just funny the way I heard it in my head. I only know of Musco from their reputation, not from actual industry experience. What you said does actually make sense with what many people are saying about the lighting.

I mean I think most people are aware of this, but the talk of the lighting being a bug/defective bulb, instead of a feature made we worry that that not everyone knew this was a strategy to draw the visual attention to the court. The Lakers have had this strategy for awhile, and interestingly even though the Clips and Lakers played in the same building they had different lighting styles for like 10 years.

Although I agree that I don't care for the lighting, Hilton is awesome.

We in the industry call them 'lamps' not 'bulbs'
But yes LED have come a long ways in the last couple of years.

Playing ****** basketball and losing games you shouldn’t when you have a chance to be in the conference title hunt might have something to do with it

jereseib paid you to post this didn't he?

First it was ties, now lighting, yet another angle of holding Prohm accountable for such a horrible run in ISU basketball history.

That diabolic bastard will stop at nothing to try and convince people Steve Prohm is simply Ken Trickey reincarnated. And that Fred Hoiberg was actually the love child of Adolph Rupp and John Wooden.

:)

The answer to your question about the balcony is likely yes.

The color temperature of the LED lights is probably quite a bit different than the old lights. I doubt Hilton got color tuning LEDs so they are stuck with whatever they were to begin with. They do make color tuning LED fixtures that are a godsend for arenas that do both NBA and NHL since the two leagues have very different color temperature standards.

Also the Color Rendering Index (CRI) ratings of early LEDs were extremely variable from one company's fixtures to another. If the CRI is low, colors will not read true. When Hilton got their LEDs the industry was still finding itself in the LED fixture market so there were a lot of them with pretty poor CRI ratings.

As someone who has had a bit to do with lighting an arena I can tell you that I am pretty certain that it is not darker in the parquet and balcony than it was before. It is likely marginally brighter. What has changed is that it is very much brighter and more evenly lit on the floor. This is good for HD and (someday) higher resolution television. This means that when the cameras balance for the light level on the floor the rest of the arena appears darker.
Light nerd. Excuse me, lamp nerd.

I know. That was in direct reply to the terminology in the post to which I was responding. If I changed it to lamps it might have been confusing for him.

Once again, it is my fault! I'm dragging Velo down to my layman's level Sorry.

But it is true that I get an almost instant headache when I sit near the floor. And I do miss the more golden tones on the old TV broadcasts. As for the balcony being darker in person, I don't think it is, except that it might seem darker because the floor is brighter.
