The nominations are out:

I haven't seen many of the main films, other than Black Panther (which I liked but didn't love). I haven't seen the film he's in, but would love to see Willem Dafoe finally get an Oscar. Same with Wes Anderson - while I loved Isle of Dogs, it's not his most deserving film to date, but I'd still love to see him get one for animated feature. I hope RBG runs away with documentary.

I enjoyed the story and cultural aspects of Black Panther, but my god, some of the CGI in that film was terrible and made me lose my suspension of disbelief. Especially during the final battle scenes.

Man, I have a ton of catching up to do. I really want to see Vice, If Beale Street Could Talk, and First Reformed.
Kind of surprised at the Best Picture nom for Bohemian Rhapsody based on what I' had heard about it - solid performance from Rami Malek but a mess of a script and screenplay.

Certainly a cultural phenomena. You know that when your little blonde grand nephew in oil town Montana goes as Black Panther for Halloween.

Some of the best pic noms are odd. I would have had First Reformed in there. An amazing film. Leave No Trace is better than a couple those as well.

Bohemian Rhapsody was pretty clunky but if there were an award for final scene or whatever for the Live Aid performance, it would be a strong candidate.

Bohemian Rhapsody was solid but definitely paint-by-the-numbers. It also didn't take many risks or really explore Freddy's sexuality. I'd imagine it was nominated because it's hard to watch that movie and not feel good and get the tinglies while watching some of the performances.

Remember when the Academy announced it was adding a category for best popular film? After getting mercilessly mocked and called out as nothing more than a ratings grab, they scrapped the idea. But I think including 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Black Panther' is their way of still trying to draw in more viewers. I haven't seen 'Black Panther' so maybe it's worthy of the nom, but I've heard 'Rhapsody' has no business as a best film candidate, especially at the expense of 'Beale Street'.

I think not really exploring his sexuality is what made it a better movie. It could have really gone down that path and made it really dark with some of the situations he exposed himself to. They were more than able to tell the story of his homosexuality without needing a scene full of nudity and sex that wouldn't really have fit with the hopeful and lighter tone of the rest of the movie. Plus, the concert scenes were out of this world good.

I really enjoyed it.

Story Co.
I've seen Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star is Born, BlacKkKlansman, and Black Panther. Enjoyed them all but was especially surprised by BlacKkKlansman and Bohemian Rhapsody most likely because I didn't have big expectations going in. Fully expected A Star is Born to be my hands down favorite of the year but Rami Malek was just too good and that Live Aid scene made up for any issues throughout the rest of the movie. It's my pick for Best Picture so far but that could definitely change when I get around to seeing the other four.

Of the eight so far I've seen Green Book, Vice, and A Star is Born. Green Book is my favorite of the three, but think all of them are very good. Christian Bale is unreal and has to be the favorite for best actor.

I love movies, but tend to see them out of theatres, so I am always behind on this kind of stuff for award season. I always have strong thoughts a few years out.

Sadly, the only film I've seen of any nominees is Ralph Breaks the Internet.

Is Bird Box not in consideration because of netflix? They were on the last award show I thought. I've seen that and it was decent, but nothing special so I'm not saying it should be included for any reason.

Add me to the crew that doesn't grok Bohemian Rhapsody as a Best Picture candidate. Enjoyable film? Most definitely. Best Picture? Not even close.

It was a pretty marginal plot, CGI was not great, but I think it has a good chance to win, because it does have a very heavy handed social message, which seems to be way more important to the academy than films being entertaining. I liked the movie, but it definitely was not an oh wow, let's watch that again flick. At least it isn't like some of the unwatchable crap that no one sees winning best picture.

Like this list of must see movies:

  • 2018 - "The Shape of Water"
  • 2017 - "Moonlight"
  • 2016 - "Spotlight"
  • 2015 - "Birdman"
  • 2014 - "12 Years a Slave"
  • 2013 - "Argo"
  • 2012 - "The Artist"
  • 2011 - "The King's Speech"
  • 2010 - "The Hurt Locker"
  • 2009 - "Slumdog Millionaire"
  • 2008 - "No Country for Old Men"
  • 2007 - "The Departed"
  • 2006 - "Crash"

Bird Box isn't in consideration because it's not good enough.

Roma picked up 10 noms and it's a Netflix movie.

I'd do Minding the Gap for Doc, I haven't seen Into the Spider-Verse for animated but supposedly it's amazing. Green Book won't win due to the controversy (look it up if you want to). I think Roma is going to win a lot of awards.

Haven't seen any of the movies nominated however how could you leave out Super Troopers 2??!?!?

Also surprised They Shall Not Grow Old didn't get a nod for best documentary.

That makes sense. I heard so much about it, then we watched it a few nights ago and i was like meh. I just didn't know if the oscars omitted streaming movies.

My stance stands, I havent seen any of this stuff because they release right before the award season so I'll see them all in a year or two, like Get Out, i loved it but was 2 years too late.

Very ho hum Oscar noms. I really don't have a movie or two that I absolutely loved this year, which sucks.

Sadly it has come down to that lately. They have so many online list of films that should have won over those that did, mainly because they hold up for more than a year or two.
