Very ho hum Oscar noms. I really don't have a movie or two that I absolutely loved this year, which sucks.

I didn't get knocked on my butt by anything this year, really, either. I loved RBG, and really want to see Won't You Be My Neighbor, but nothing else really kicked me. I was a little surprised after Get Out's success that A Quiet Place didn't get something more than sound, but that's about it. I wish Wes Anderson had been nominated for director - he's deserved it for almost 20 years.

It looks also like Lin Manuel isn't getting his EGOT this year, either.

I've usually seen three or four movies on the list of best movie nominees every year, but this year, I've only seen 2 of them and I never saw any of them in the theater. I caught Black Panther on a premium channel and I saw the Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix. Strange, strange little movie. Weirder even than most of the Cohen brothers movies.

Anyone get through all of Roma on netflix?

I got through maybe 20 mins to a half hour and gave up. So boring. But maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance?

Haven't seen it, going to, heard from friends I trust that it's definitely a slow burn, kind of similar to 'Moonlight', and that after seeing it they weren't sure if they loved it, liked it, or neither. But what they agreed on is that the quality of the filmmaking -- separate from story, characters, pace, etc. -- was exquisite. That apparently is what's carrying it into all of the awards it's getting.

The little of it I did see was some really great filmmaking, scenes, etc. But it just wasn't really going anywhere for the first 20+ mins and I couldn't take it anymore.

If you're not feeling it you're not feeling it and you trust your gut. I felt similar with 'Moonlight', came away not nearly as impressed as apparently the rest of the world but was in the theatre with the wife so walking out wasn't really an option.

Bohemian Rhapsody was solid but definitely paint-by-the-numbers. It also didn't take many risks or really explore Freddy's sexuality. I'd imagine it was nominated because it's hard to watch that movie and not feel good and get the tinglies while watching some of the performances.

A lot of it felt like a VH1 original than a major production, save again for the Live Aid scene.

Very strange but interesting. My wife had a pretty visceral reaction to the captive traveling perform and wouldn’t watch anymore.

I wasn't totally sure how I felt about Moonlight. Didn't love it but didn't hate it. One of those I keep thinking I should watch again but I have a feeling it was just ok and my opinion wouldn't change much.

We saw 'Moonlight' a week after seeing 'Lion'. We were really blown away by 'Lion' so having to follow that up didn't help the cause for 'Moonlight' either.
