I imagine the LA "scene" was a big draw to Kliff. Football aside, I imagine he will be living a life that will not suck.

It is, but maybe he's playing the long game. Take the OC job now, and by the end of next season maybe he's secured the head coach job if USC struggles again. For all their struggles that's still a prestigious job. A good coach can still win there.

Who’s the good coach you are talking about?

Kliff is a 5-star offensive coordinator and a 2.5-star head coach.

Will do good things at USC with their QBs and offense, and turn that into another high-paying head coach job somewhere in a year or 2. And then he will be meh as a head coach for 3-4 years and get fired. Lather, rinse, repeat.

How does a coach get fired from a job that he never finished better than 6th in conference, and turn it into potentially an NFL job?

Way up there
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/01/07/report-kliff-kingsbury-interviewing-with-nfl-teams/

It might be a short run at USC for Kingsbury. There are reports out there that he's interviewing for NFL jobs.

It's an odd situation. He had to know that there would be multiple NFL jobs opening up if he just waited it out until Black Monday, so why take the USC job?

USC OC sounds better than former Texas Tech HC...seriously though, I don't think he thought he was on the NFL radar but with the hype around young, offensive minded coaches along with the insane coaching turnover this year made him a legit candidate. Everyone wants the next Mcvay or Nagy.

Maybe the quick interest from USC caught the eye of some of the NFL peeps. If he had sat out there twisting in the wind until NFL jobs opened up, it might have been a red flag.

That's a full on guess though.

He was always going to be of interest to them. I was surprised he took that USC job so quick and was even more surprised when they thought blocking teams from talking to him would be the right approach.

It's interesting that hiring someone who got fired at TTU as a head coach could be looked at as a bad move for USC, but a good move for an NFL team.

I saw a note in the ESPN scroll that said USC was blocking his opportunities to interview elsewhere. Guessing that's why he resigned?

He had two options, stay at USC, or quit to be interviewed. The NFL was forcing teams to ask permission of ADs first with threat of suspensions and fines if they didn't.
