It's really nice to know we don't have to worry about fouls as much with them coming back. That will allow us to play defense a lot better, not that it's bad.

Like you said, our defense is not bad, but the extra bodies will keep the legs fresher for later in the game. I think there's definitely a correlation between the really aggressive defense, lack of bodies and offensive lapses.

It was fun hearing Walton give our guys props for their hustle last night.

One thing more than other years, we have a surplus of guys that can switch 4 positions.

NWB, THT, Shayok, Talley, and Halliburton to a lessor extent (once puts more weight on)... really makes defense so much easier without mismatches.

Yeah, we definitely need Young if he's able to go at 100%. That gives us really solid, starter-quality depth in the post, so our guys can go full tilt and not have to worry so much about foul trouble unbalancing the lineup. He's also our best defensive player in the post.

It's going to come down to matchups game to game probably. I could see a team who starts 2 big physical post players and having both Lard and Jacobson with Young and Conditt as defensive depth off the bench that will allow us to mix and match and have some cushion if someone gets into early foul trouble.

Lard is such a talent it's going to be hard not to start him if he's got his act together finally. Last year he was such a beast scoring in the paint and defensively too. I don't know who you bench, THT has looked really good so far and having him and Shayok on the floor at the same time it's nice to have 2 guys physical enough to drive to the rim like they can. I think it may not necessarily matter who starts but what group of guys plays the bulk of the minutes in a game once we get a few minutes in and can tell what kind of tempo and what matchups we can exploit. Haliburton is going to be in the mix just for his defense alone but he too can score in bunches too if he gets hot. The depth is a nice change from the problems we had last year with not even having 10 guys to practice most weeks.

Lewis is going to be one of the odd guys out of the rotation. He just can't seem to consistently hit the open looks he gets and turnovers are still a problem for him. When you watch him warm up he has a pretty looking shot but just doesn't look that confident when he's on the floor. Griffin probably will see his minutes go away too and Talley really will have to work hard to earn a spot in the rotation probably. I love that these 4 freshman kids are getting these minutes because it's going to push everyone in practice knowing there are some guys hungry for minutes behind them.

I was thinking the same on Solo getting a RS if he isn't close to 100%. If everyone else is back and healthy we are going to have a lot of able bodies fighting for the minutes at the 4 and 5. Obviously Jacobson and Lard but Shayok, THT, and Talley all look like they could get the job done at the 4 when we want to go with a smaller line-up. Plus now that the opportunity to red shirt Conditt has past it would be good to get him at least some limited experience.

I have been pleasantly surprised by Jacobsen this season.

But I feel like "Beast Mode Lard" is better than him. I feel like we'll get a lot more "Beast Mode Lard" this season. But obviously that is yet to be seen.

Once we're rolling I see two different lineups pending who we play:

Small-ball match up opponent
1. NWB
2. Wiggy
3. Shayok
4. THT
5. Lard or Jacobson

Size match up opponent
1. NWB
2. Wiggy
3. Shayok
4. Jacobson
5. Lard

Jacobson is good enough to start - but strange as it sounds, I would like to see how he would be off bench - big time spark and instant energy. Could be the Big 12 sixth man of the year. So, try a few games with Lard - Solo starting the big line up.

THT and Talley are the first guys off the bench, Haliburton still plays alot of minutes, Griffin, Conditt, and Lewis play sparingly or when we get in foul trouble. Young tries to come back but struggles to get healthy so ends up taking a medical redshirt.

Will he play Lard and Talley, or keep them on the bench as part of their punishment?

IMO - I can't see Prohm immediately starting someone who came off a month long suspension. Lard will "earn" his way to the starting line up early in conference play. If history is a guide - right after a two game losing streak in conference play.

TL has got to start knocking down the long ball or he'll be at the end of the bench real quick. That's something we need desperately and I had hoped he would get it figured out this year but it hasn't looked good early and he's running out of time to show he belongs in the rotation with the other 4 guys coming back within the next month/month and a half.

I dont see him having much of a future here unless he starts knocking down some shots. He really doesnt do much of anything well if hes not making a few threes. There was a play last night where he threw a lob right to the defender was was 3 feet away.

I wouldnt be surprised if he is our yearly transfer out of the program to a mid major.

With lard I don't see Jacobsen starting over THT. I think we go smaller. I think Young is the odd man out right now. So the good thing is that will allow him to really heal all the way before we have to press him into action.

Playing what ifs here but a lot of people are just taking it for a fact all 4 will be back. What if Young's injury does not allow him to play 100% and he keeps re injuring it or just never comes back this year. Also, the 2 suspended what if the decision is made to extend their suspensions or not play them at all? Correct me if I am wrong but when he announced it he said AT LEAST till December?

I totally agree with Lard, no way you just plug him into the starting lineup. Our lineup should be NWB, Wigginton, Shayok, THT, and Jacobson when everyone gets back. There are 4 guys who can get to the rim/create their own shoot, which will be fun to watch.

If/when Lard gets fully back, we may look at him for Jacobson in the starting lineup further down the road. Solo, Talley, and Halliburton are all solid B12 players and would be great off the bench.

Hopefully this is an issue later in the season, because I think the chances of all 4 players making it fully back with the others remaining healthy isn't a given.

Maybe, but if they come off the bench, it may just be easing them back into the flow of our game plan rather than some added punishment. Plus, the guys that have been playing have earned their places, so it may not be as simple as that either.

Young should consider RS if he cannot come back until January, unless he is needed.

Jacobsen and Lard would provide most of the minutes with Condit filling gaps.

IF Young is healthy, I think he splits minutes with Lard in the post. If others are scoring adequately, Young plays for the defensive presence. If offense lags, Lard plays more. Jacobson at the 4, with Talley getting minutes. (Lard and Young seldom in the game together.)
Weiler-Babb, Wigginton play point and SG, with Haliburton in whenever either of those two goes out. That leaves Shayok and THT sharing the SF position, understanding that they will be in the game a lot together, either at 4 or SG, based on matchups, game flow, foul trouble, etc.
Lewis, Griffin, Conditt minutes drastically reduced as the season goes on.
(One man's opinion.)
