The 2018 NIT will feature four rules modifications:

• The three-point line will be extended by approximately 1 foot 8 inches to the same distance used by FIBA for international competition (22 feet 1.75 inches).
• The free throw lane will be widened from 12 feet to 16 feet, consistent with the width used by the NBA.
• The games will be divided into four 10-minute quarters as opposed to two 20-minute halves. Teams will shoot two free throws beginning with the fifth foul of each quarter.
• The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds.

Hate it.

Let college basketball be college basketball. Quit trying to make it more like the NBA or International Game.

What has made college basketball great over the years is all of the diffrerent styles that have been and can be successful. Stop trying to legislate that out.

Honestly, with our young team, maybe its better off we dont go to the NIT. Not sure how much you can grow with some rules that completely change strategy.

3 pt line - uhhh....okay, fine. Not necessary, but fine.
Free throw lane - why. It's fine.
Quarters - no, no, no. Stop it.
Shot clock - whatever. I don't see the point, but fine.

I love college hoops, I hate the NBA. If they turn college ball into NBA rules, I'll quit watching.

The NCAA made some excellent rule changes 2-3 years ago (don't remember exactly when). They did almost everything right. Don't tinker with stuff that doesn't need tinkering. Fix actual issues.

If by different styles, you mean teams that hold the ball for 30 seconds before taking a bad shot - then sure.

60% of college basketball is completely garbage offense and poor defense. Need to continue to make advancements for more offensive flow - and dont think this goes far enough.

Some teams will do that sure. Nobody likes watching a team that stands out near halfcourt for 20 seconds before spending 7-8 seconds on actual play for the whole game.

But past a certain point shortening the shot clock also hurts the opposite style. There's something great in an offense that moves the ball around well and finds the good shot even if it takes a little longer. Shorter clocks can hurt this style as well.

I don't really understand the dislike for these experimental rule changes. The only one that would possibly change things drastically is the three point line change. I don't think college basketball rules are what actually make college basketball more appealing than the NBA, for those who have that opinion.

Ok with trying it. Nit a big fan of the 3 line. Are they just trying to fall in line with everything else with quarters? I think men’s cbball is the only one to use halves right?
Do teams that make the nit have to redo part of their court?

None of the changes are needed.

The three point line doesn't need to be farther away. Watching more Steph Curry wannabes launching shots 5 feet behind the line is already not enjoyable. No need to make it worse.

Free throw lane dimension change? Does ANYONE care about this?

The extra stoppages for quarters make it worse, plus it gives fans two extra possessions of watching PGs dribble at the top of the key for 20 seconds before running some last second play.

*Reset shot clock? Sure, it may speed up the end of games and reduce some of the fouling, but this seems like it rewards a defense for not boxing out.

Reset shot clock? So give a team less incentive to go after offensive rebounds? Sure, it may speed up the end of games and reduce some of the fouling, but this seems like it rewards a defense for not boxing out.

I agree with most of this, but how does a 20 second shot clock after an offensive rebound give a team less incentive for a rebound? 20 seconds is plenty to get a good look, especially when you're already in the offensive zone.

Virginia plays the slowest pace in the country and their offense is far from 'holding the ball for 30 seconds before taking a bad shot'. Same with Wisconsin, Syracuse, Vermont, Notre Dame and the better UNI teams over the years. All traditionally in the 320s or slower in Adjusted Tempo.

The only Power 5 in the top 30 in tempo? Oklahoma. I love Trae Young but is him running up the floor and taking the first available 3 really entertaining and good offense?

Instead of slamming on the NBA - watch a Golden State, Houston, or Boston offensive set. You don't need 30 seconds of dribble handoffs to get a good look.
