Mizzou athletics operated in red last year, first time since joining SEC

Several factors. One is dismal football attendance as people have lost interest in the SEC and continuing fallout from the football team protest.

Also it costs money to send every non-revenue sport to Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama etc.

Money from the tv contract is a little more. Lack of fan interest and travel expenses are eating that up and more. The grass isn't always greener.

The move has clearly been bad for them. But the article also indicates they were operating at a deficit in the B12, then a surplus every year since joining the SEC until last year.

No it doesn't. It mentions they operated at a deficit the FINAL year in the Big 12, and only because they didn't get a full distribution due to their decision to leave.

Did the SEC even want them? I remember they were all excited about TAMU, but with Missouri it was more like "oh well I guess you're somewhat geographically close and we could use another program to keep our numbers even"

Okay which one is it or is it a parallel to the idea: I had a date last night, but she was ugly!

I remember the announcer for the bball game vs ISU talk about how awesome it was to see the arena full because they hadn't sold out a game in years.
Pathetic fans.

I live in CoMO and I can tell you a lot of fans did not want to abandon 100 years of tradition and move to the SEC. That decision was made because the people running the university who were not Missourians thought the SEC would be a cash cow and thought regional rivalries were old fashioned.

Tickets sold for basketball this year are up because of the hype surrounding the new coach and recruiting. Tickets sold for football are dismal and turnstile is even worse - around 35,000 turnstile for some SEC football games.

The fans are simply reflecting reality.

I'd take them back if they were interested. Gotta get that telephone trophy back. It'd be nice to have a neighbor again. Last I knew there was no exit fee for the SEC, correct?

Missouri might technically be a neighboring state, but Lawrence is closer to Ames than Columbia, and Manhattan's about a wash.

Mizzou is making more money being worse in the SEC than they did being middling in the B12. They've never really drawn crowds, so that's not a new phenomenon for them. They wipe their tears with the add'l $EC money while continuing to be irrelevant.

Hey my friend this might just be theeePost of the Century...For 30 years I traveled to Faurot Field everytime ISU played football there, and enjoyed every game....Yeah the Grass is NEVER Greener on the other side of the street as they say....I like the part where they say, "people have lost interest in the SEC"...well that didn't take long now did it. I hope Mizzou keeps losing money for the next Century or so......

I'd say with the current BIG XII deal Misery would be in better shape.
