I got our of work 30 minutes ago and need to get home and sleep because the kids get out of school at 12:20 today. I get on my car and the key won't go in so I moved the wheel around a bit and the key went in finally, but it wont turn. I'm sitting in a parking lot so I have no tools or anything. Any advice?

Thanks in advance

Is the car in park?
I don't suppose you have any graphite around to lubricate the ignition mechanism.

Type of car? Subaru has a plug to remove by the gear shift that once removed, will let you use a small screw driver to align shift to start. Otherwise , your key is getting worn and needs filed by a mechanic or a new key.

We have some Chevy's at work that do this. About all we've done in the past is jiggle the hell out of the wheel while trying to turn the key and eventually it seems to unlock. Took me about five full minutes of that when it happened to me.

Yep. Just keep trying.

Happened to me a few years back when I had a Grand Prix. I had to jiggle it and put it in a certain way for the car to start. It turned out something in the key went bad (computer chip?). I had to get a new one and it worked fine after that.

This has worked for me as well - keep jiggling the steering wheel while trying to turn the key - but don't turn the key too hard or it might break.

Not exactly sure.
If you can move the gear selector, move it down past neutral and back. That can temporarily relieve some pressure on the steering wheel.

This might have been the last place I would have gone looking for help.

Youre new here, so I wont go too hard at you, but CF is usually the first place I go when I need help with something I dont know how to do, and 95% of the time I find the answer im looking for. Using the search function for small DIY projects has saved me money ever since we bought our first house in 2011.
