Marketable to whom? The Mountain West or the All American Conference?
Iowa State has very good fan base support. But today's market is all about television revenue. Maryland and Rutgers were not added to the Big Ten because of their awesome Athletic Departments. It was all about TV sets.
Bottom line is that we need decent TV markets to add to the numbers in the league for the CCG. The Big 12 is all about the market appeal of Oklahoma and Texas. That is it. Sprinkle in some decent programs for them to play and have a CCG. If a team like Baylor or TCU can emerge as champion with a great record and CCG win, then they will go to the CFP. But otherwise this is all about Oklahoma and Texas. They are the Big Boys.
You are not going to poach ACC teams because of the GOR that those teams have given the Conference. Big 12 has a GOR as well. And it is in Iowa State's best interest to expand and then get the GOR extended. Big 10 is not coming for Iowa State. They are looking for the next big state with TV sets to market their Big Ten network.
The longer that Iowa State stays in a Power 5 Conference, the better the chances of survival if change does take place. If we do nothing, then it will be easy for Texas and Oklahoma to leave. At that time we will be hoping for additions to add to a fledgeling conference that won't have the presence of an Oklahoma or Texas to leverage a decent TV contract.
Do you honestly know where Iowa State was going to land when the Big 12 almost folded? Having our head in the sand is a much preferred place to where your head is located.
'Geographic' TV markets is a dying philosophy. The internet is seeing to that. And, in that vein, 'national marketing' is essential to growing name brand. ISU has an enormous alumni base. And, it's very clear their patronage is assured. It also has one of the most dynamic names of which we're seeing some incredible videos being developed. So, what I'm trying to say is expanding the league into different geographical markets should not be for the TV viewership, but rather for the league marketing.
