I would hate for either party to come away a winner in this. Fennelly clearly has an issue with verbally abusing his players and I wouldn't doubt if some of his outbursts come across as racially charged. The alleged comments to Chassidy Cole were disturbing.

It's also clear that Moody had a bad attitude and not exactly a sympathetic character. Of course, that doesn't mean she should be berated, embarrassed and intimidated at every turn. What a mess. I wouldn't be sad to see Fennelly go. His tactics don't represent a old school/new school divide as much as the represent him as a poor teacher and an *******.

When taken as a whole, the allegations are concerning. Maybe the worst one is that an assistant coach said the team wouldn't have this many black players ever again.

We don't know if it is true or not - the lawsuit is just one side of the story. But I definitely think the allegations are concerning for ISU and for Fennelly.

Homosexuality in WBB is very prevalent. Is it in Football? Are there football player parents who are worried that their son might be scoped out in the locker room?

Because that is a really REAL issue when a coach sits in a WBB recruit's home with her parents.

However, I don't think Fennelly uses to the same level that Pingeton does, for example, who is very public about her role in the FCC and her thoughts on homosexuality.

Eh, I suspect there are more gays in FB than you think. The macho locker room atmosphere in many male sports programs (from middle school clear through to the pros) tends to keep them closeted until retirement, or risk losing career, playing time, etc.

Reading the complaint, it seems evident that Fennelly had a Nikki Moody problem, there's nothing in there to indicate it's a racial problem.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the lawsuit. I reserve the right to change that stance if more comes out or some of the more damning quotes can be corroborated.

That doesn't make me a fan of his methods.

Well this was taken completely out of context. It used to be that Bluder used the anti-gay thing against Fen during recruiting. She landed a couple of players because of it at Drake. Fennelly markets the same thing every ISU coach markets...family. Have you read all of the football recruits are saying why they come to Iowa State? Family atmosphere. The allegations of anti--gay were pure BS at the time. You can market the program as being "family" without being anti-– gay. It means that there are people here that will support you and there are places to go for a family environment (local folks who act as parents for the students). We do the same thing at the University I teach at. Actually, every dorm floor (we are a much smaller University) has "parents" who provide opportunities for students to get off campus, relax and enjoy having a home cooked meal. That is what family is all about. that is what family means to Iowa State athletics.

"Family environment" is definitely code for "gay players aren't welcome" in women's basketball. It doesn't carry the same connotations in other sports but you're incredibly naive if you don't realize that's what it means in this sport.

That's really stretching it.

I can see why one would want to be careful using that, because many politicians have twisted that into being about homosexuality or lack thereof, but having a family environment, as in an environment where everyone is really close, is a great thing to have and to feature.
