Can he recruit?

Willie Fritz has 2 years as a head coach at the FBS level. Georgia Southern moved from FCS to FBS when Fritz arrived.

Matt Campbell is 35 years old. He was the youngest coordinator in FBS and then became the youngest head coach in FBS 4 years ago.

Impressive work. So Fritz has a higher ceiling AND is less risky.

There are suggestions of terms but nothing concrete yet. Some say as low as 1.5 to around 2.5 for 5 years. The rumors are all over though and nobody really knows accurate figures just yet.

I saw $8.25M over four years. Have to dig it up where I saw it. But who knows, they are still negotiating so it could be anything.

Georgia Southern had already made the decision to move to FBS and the Sun Belt Conference prior to hiring Willie Fritz.

IMO, the Sun Belt is lower in the FBS than the MAC.

Jack Trice's Iowa State coach was from Ohio and I think he left us to coach Ohio State.

Jack and his friend and his coach were all from Ohio and came to ISU together. I don't recall where the coach went to after us. Earle Bruce coached high school football in Massillon, Ohio. Of course we know where he went.

Nick Saban coached at Toledo.

I'm good with this guy. I think he's a hire that a lot of people didn't think would look at ISU. He's been around winning football and with that talent we have back next year, that can go a long ways towards a turnaround.

You'll get slammed with sarcasm on this one, but it's one more good point that shows how many high quality coaches have come from that program. That's only a good thing.

This is the pertinent question ! Coach Campbell is from Ohio. 90+% of his present staff is from Ohio. 85+% of his players are from Ohio, or an adjacent state. Where will he be recruiting players (for Iowa State) from. It will not be from Ohio.

Well Toledo nearly got Mike Warren........so maybe we will be recruiting players from Oklahoma.

When Earle Bruce was coach we got a lot of players from Ohio.

So ISU is hiring a HC with 4 years experience at one school that we should have beaten this year and passing on Willie Fritz who has 19 years experience as a HC at 3 different schools and of the 19 years only 2 losing seasons - ok... go state.

I'm guessing Fritz wasn't really interested despite the rumors.

Plus the cupboard is less bare here than at Mizzou when Pinkel arrived.

After watching the presser, I can see why this guy was hired. I do think he's a great hire. I like him more than I thought i would. So far...not underwhelmed at all.
