Would you have called the unsportsmanlike penalty in the Oregon/Arizona Game?

The referees were correct to throw a flag

My vote is yes. It was too bad that it was at a crucial part of the game. The deciding point for me was running to midfield. To me if he would've just stood up and made the action quickly at the point of the play, I might have let it slide. However, putting himself at midfield was a clear act to bring attention to himself and that deserved the flag. My two cents.

Lol no, total ******** call. Everyone acts like a ******* moron when they do the slightest thing anymore and rarely is anyone penalized for it. Unless they're getting in the face of an opponent you should let them play. Terrible call.

"Oh, I broke up a 4 yard slant route? Better pose like an idiot for a minute."

I wouldn't have called it, but I wouldn't argue against calling it either. I don't even get what the point of doing it was.

As an Oregon fan, it was the right call for doing something incredibly stupid when the game was on the line. Celebrate once you get the W, not before.

if he had just stood up and done that, no penalty. the running around, looking at the arizona bench is what deserves it in my mind.

or just act like you've made a sack before

I put yes in the poll because it was probably the right call. I don';t know if I would have called it, but it was the right call

Was there something I missed? The guy was excited he sacked the QB on 4th and goal, what should he have done? Just run to the sideline and show no emotion? These calls are just stupid, let the players play.

I think players celebrate way to much for stupid ****, so I have no problem with throwing flags for stupid celebrations, but you need to flag them all then. In today's game this was not especially egregious, he ran to his own bench and bowed, wow that's awful.

I voted no. For me, that does not cross my threshold for unsportsmanlike. Should he have done it, absolutely not. However, for me, you would have to do far worse to get a flag from me.

I may not like the rule, but it is the rule. Players should know and care about the rules as much as their celebration routines. It is just dumb to do something like that and dare the ref to make the call.

This is absolutely the correct answer, especially with the game on the line.

Didn't see the game; just watched the video. Isn't there something in the unsportsmanlike conduct rule about "scripted" celebration and/or drawing attention to oneself? I would agree with most here that doing that at the point of the sack probably wouldn't have gotten a flag. Running to mid field, stopping, and performing can easily be deemed "scripted" and drawing attention, IMO.

The call seemed a little arbitrary. I've seen more boisterous celebrations go unflagged. If that's how all the Pac 12 refs would call it, then I guess I have no problem with it. But if the rule on the books leaves any room for interpretation then maybe the rules committee needs to take a long look at it.

That said, the player deserves most of the responsibility. Be smart and don't put yourself in a position where a ref is forced to make a judgment call, because the judgment might not go your way.

I'm in this boat. I could see it both ways. Yes it was dumb and he should not have done it, but was it really bad enough to affect the outcome of the game?

I do understand it should be called consistently though.
