Like, I know they make horror movies. And they make some very well made horror movies. But do they make SCARY movies any more? Do any of you have any suggestions?

It might be helpful to have a baseline on what you mean by scary. I mean, are we talking scary as in "sound x is unexpected and really loud so I kind of wet myself a bit" scared, or "you know, that neighbor's kid really reminds me of Damien (the Omen) so I'm going to be worried that he might be possessed and try to murder everything for the forseeable future" kind of scared?
Session 9 gets a lot of favorable play in the horror community. I agreed, it was very weird and different, but I wouldn't classify it as scary.
I realize by far probably, horror is the most subjective genre. That's a wide range of what people call scary. It's just, to me, jump scares or blood and gore aren't scary. I want something that will make me not to want to close my eyes when I go to bed. Sadly, with the retreaded garbage constantly being put out these days, I don't think that will ever happen again.
Yeah, horror is a WIDE genre nowadays. Things like sci-fi horror (Event Horizon), action horror (Blood Creek, one of my favorites), and dark comedy horror (Dead End, made me laugh quite a bit) make the term "horror" very hard to pin-point what is "scary". I love all kinds of horror movies and loved zombie movies before they were cool (adjust hipster glasses). To me a scary movie is not one that makes me jump, but one that scares me anytime I remember it after the movie is done. And by that, I don't mean gory/brutal/disgusting. I've seen some disturbing, violent movies that still bother me when I remember them, but I don't consider those scary either. I guess it is all relative to what will stay with you and what your biggest fears are.
To me "horror" has become slasher, blood and guts type of stuff. They put everything right out in front of you to gross you out. All started with Friday the 13th and Halloween. I still much prefer the old Alfred Hitchcock type of films or even the original horror genre of Dracula and friends. One of my favorites as a kid was Dr. Phibes starring Vincent Price. Now that was stuff that made a kid stay awake at night. The new stuff...meh...don't care for it and won't go.

I agree. One that comes to mind is The Thing (John Carpenter). Great soundtrack, well filmed, excellent building of tension.
Occassionally the wife and I will watch an episode or two of the old Twilight Zone tv shows...some are very cheesy...but some I would classify as oddly scary! There are quite a few episodes that very enjoyable...and certainly make you think!

Aside from scary horror movies, I have a passion for overly cheesy horror movies as well.
I'm actually right now watching a 4 hour documentary where they break down movie by movie with interviews and behind the scenes and stuff for every nightmare. It's called "Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy". It's really interesting if you're into that sort of thing.
I never thought there was a single scary thing about that movie. Well made movie. And I never saw the original Japanese version. But I didn't find that one scary at all.
Honestly I get more scared about the "Creatures of the night" documentaries or whatever they are called that are on Discovery Channel than anything. They make it real believable sometimes
Watch Pontypool sometime if you haven't yet. Once you find out what's happening it may be a love it or hate it moment though. It definitely requires a suspension of disbelief.
I haven't seen a scary movie in a while. Might help if they didn't spoil all the good parts in the previews( if you would like to call those parts good)
I really enjoyed "The Ring" That image of Katie in the closet is really what sold me on that movie. I just couldn't get that out of my head.
The Japanese version was more like a 30 minute short film that they stretched out into 90 minutes.
The first "Nightmare on Elm Street" was a great flick ruined by all the numerous remakes that turned Freddy into a comic book character.
"The Blair Witch Project" is a love it or hate it type of movie. People complained because you didn't see anything. I just thought the concept of watching these people slowly losing it in the woods was pretty good. The last 10 seconds of the film was an outstanding way to end the movie. Too many people want everything all tied up in a nice package at the end.
As a kid we used to love watching "Creature Features" at 8pm Saturday nights. Lots of different movies, the classic Universal Studio flicks as well as cheesy 50's Sci Fi. ("Fiend without a Face" was a favorite)
I do consider Slasher films as a subcategory of the horror genre and wish people would refer to them that way. Not a big fan of the Torture Porn movies as they are there more gross out than scare you.
Someone mentioned John Carpenter's "The Thing". That was a good flick. Unfortunately today's generation will poo poo on the special effects.
There has to be some good ones out there. It's just so hard to find them.
