My sister is in need of a laptop, just looking for a basic, inexpensive unit - probably going with Dell (but not locked in on that).

I've seen coupons/discount codes discussed here before. Have any links to those? :)

Also - Dell coupons and specials reset on Thursdays but the $400 off above is about as good as they get anymore for the most parts. For dedicated graphics you'd want to go with the XPS line or if you wanted to wait a couple weeks Dell will come out with the E series that will have LED backlit screens (much brighter and longer lasting).

I bought an Inspiron 1525 a month or so back and I've been pretty happy with it, just FYI.

Thanks for the info.

New development not even 30 minutes after I posted this - found out she is being deployed to Iraq in October - she just completed basic training last week for the Army Reserves - Military Police. No need for a laptop in the near future.

Rough evening.

I will think about her and pray for her like I do all of our troops serving at home and abroad. Tell her thanks from cyclonefanatic.com!

Thanks guys, just crazy how things can change in a moments notice - she did sign up for it though.

I'm rather proud yet very nervous at the same time. No need for sympathy and all that - she'll do us proud.

On our trip in '03, personal laptops were mainly used to play movies. Wear and tear on them is outrageous in the fine sand and grit.

I'd not take a laptop to Iraq, but my data on this is severely dated.

Most of the guys that I know take a garbage 200 dollar jobbie cobbled together with ebay parts. It's certainly something nice to have there, but you don't want to spend serious money on one and then take it over there.

I agree 100%. She is going to want one, but like jumbopackage said, don't drop a lot of dime on it as it will likely not make it back in good shape.
