Memphis for sure after they beat a nobody, and probably Baylor because they didn't play this week. We could pass Oregon as well if they lose to Illinois, and we could even pass Kansas. We could get as high as 11th if Wichita State, Kentucky, and Oregon all lose.

Are you the Mr. DeAndre Kane himself Sir?

The thing is, we probably entered the top 20 a bit too quickly (a bit ahead of what we deserved). Since then, things have been adjusting to a more deserved ranking. Around 16 after the Iowa game seems fair. But I would have expected a more gradual ascent to 16, rather than jumping close to there after the Michigan game itself, and then (more or less) remaining there after the later Ws.

Everyone seems all about Kenpom over RPI lately. What am I missing?

Michigan is 6-3 with a loss to ISU….rated 20th
ISU is 8-0 with wins over Mich, Iowa, and BYU….rated 22nd.

People love his stats and take the ranking too seriously, pomeroy would even admit that's not what his system is for.

If you look at the Massey or sagarin rankings Iowa State is top 10. If we are picking which system we like the most I'll go with those 2.

So this Kenpom dude has 2 big 10 teams, both of which have lost to us (and have lost at least one other game), ahead of undefeated ISU?

Yep, that sounds like a genius ranking system

I was going to say that the only people I hear quote Kenpom are Big 10/Hok fans . . .

too early to tell. Iowa State passes Kansas, possibly Memphis. Gets passed by North Carolina if they beat Kentucky tonight and Florida. I'm gonna say #16

As far as I can tell Kenpom is a computer formula devised to pump up Big Ten teams, yet some non Big Ten fans still rave about it. A few years ago Wisconsin was ranked 3rd near the end of the season and they weren't even in the AP top 25. 8-12 games per team is enough data that it should know ISU is above Michigan, we'll be above every team we beat in most or every component of Sagarin next time it comes out.

No matter how many times it's explained, people never seem to grasp what Kenpom is.

Its not a ranking system based on record. It's a ranking system based on performance, specifically tempo-free offensive and defensive efficiency. It doesn't care who you've beat, it cares how you've played. To accuse him of pro-big 10 bias is just ridiculous.

As with any statistical data you have to understand what it means in order to use it correctly.

I don't care for the ranking as much as just winning :)

It does ge us more national attention, but don't want to get too highs as an upset is the inevitable.

Stupid there are so many one and two loss teams ahead of us, yet other teams like ohio state are undefeated and ranked 3rd while their best win is a now 5-4 marquette. I understand that the michigan win is becoming less impressive, but we havent lost. Duke is a "top 10" team that has two losses including a loss to a three loss kansas team. (also ranked higher than us)

Well, after beating a top 5 team last night (yes, actually mentioned by the Gazette) we should be in the top 10.
