Where's a reliable place to buy phones without buying them through your wireless provider? Wife needs a new one but I'm not willing to lose our unlimited data with Verizon nor extending our contract. I just checked out TigerDirect.com and I know they are a legit retailer. Anyone have suggestions?

I've gotten 3 or 4 off of eBay with zero issues. I think as a buyer you're protected pretty well between eBay & PayPal.

You can buy them full price from Verizon without changing your contract. At least you can do it with Sprint. My phone battery exploded and I didn't have the protection plan so that is was I did.

You can from Verizon, but a new smartphone will cost anywhere from $500 to $700 outright from them unless you get a pretty old one.

Ebay or Amazon. Just watch out for international sellers.

I bought a GS II Skyrocket replacement off Ebay when I thought my current one had **** the bed. Ended up taking it apart and fixing the power button, so the new one has gone unused.

I want to ditch AT&T, but I still have an unlimited data plan and I don't want to give that up.

Verizon is really wanting people to ditch the unlimited data. I just got an email saying I can upgrade today to Verizon Max w/ 6GB of data for $30/month. 6GB would be enough probably 9/10 months, but I currently pay less for unlimited, so....

I don't see myself getting off of unlimited until it's physically not possible anymore.

I got this too. I really really want to use as much data as I can to stick it to them.

I've never bought a cell phone without an upgrade. When you get one on ebay do you just pay the price they are selling it for and then call verizon and have them switch your service to that phone? Are there any other consequences?

You can switch the service yourself on the Verizon website. I've done it a couple times and it's relatively simple.

You can usually do it online with no charges or issues. I needed a SIM card for my latest purchase, so I just went to a Verizon store & said I needed a SIM card & that phone activated. Moments later, wham bam thank you ma'am I'm up & running. (Also with no charges or issues)

So you are buying them used? What do you look for in a seller? I haven't used Ebay in years.

I've only bought used, but there are new ones also. I just look for a good seller feedback (many have 99% +), I prefer US so it doesn't take 3 weeks to arrive, make sure they say it has a clear ESN (ready to activate), make sure it's the right carrier, no water damage. Just read the description / check out the photos closely. All of the ones I've purchased have been described very accurately.
