Folic acid, and reading books added. If it's a boy we should have lots of hand me downs. I have priced cribs and all that :eek:, apparently they go through a lot of diapers too ehh

This is only so-so accurate, our baby pooped a billion times a day until she was about four months old, but it's a good rule of thumb:

You can't stock up on diapers too much ahead of time (assuming you use disposables), because different sizes are needed at different times, and you won't know ahead of time how fast of a growth cycle your baby will be on.

I highly recommend reusable diapers. They have advanced a long ways since my parents used them. They are fairly expensive upfront, but are easy to use, easy to clean and have limited the cost of diapers to 2-4 loads of laundry a week. We've been using them for ~18 months and love them.

here's what we use:
bumGenius - Cotton Babies Cloth Diaper Store

A diaper sprayer toilet attachment is a necessity, though.

The diapers thing is a concern. We stocked up some, but haven't touched newborn diapers yet. It seems like one package or box is going to be all that's needed for that.

Size 1 and 2 look like they have a point where they overlap, so we have a small stash of those.

For the OP, be on the lookout for friends and family with hand-me-downs. Once people's children outgrow things, they see a real need to get a lot of it out of their place since they're replacing them with clothes that fit the growing child.

And look for garage sales. Same deal, but you spend a small amount of money. We loaded up for $18 at a sale near our apartment. Look for garage sales.

I'm a big fan of cloth diapers, they just weren't practical for us personally in the long run - we have soooo many clothes that we only have to do laundry every few weeks. It felt like the increase in our water consumption would have been about equal with the landfill impact.

We did use a few gDiapers for a while. They can use either a cloth or a flushable insert, so it can be like a traditional cloth OR disposable diaper. I've heard BumGenius are about the best brand out there - they're an AIO, right?

We actually only used one small pack of the newborn size. Our daughter was little, but has had a really long torso since Day 1, so she needed the Size 1 to prevent blowouts up her back. (WHICH ARE AWESOME, by the way. :skeptical:)

I've been reading about slavery this afternoon, and now that isn't the most disturbing thing that I've read. Way to go.

Oh, Erik. It gets so much grosser. Just invest in latex gloves and keep them stashed EVERYWHERE. (I figured this out about two years too late.)

That part's no surprise. You were probably blinded by cruelty.

We may invest in one of those portable pressure washers, just in case.

And a carpet steamer.

Erik, wait 'til the baby poops while sitting in a baby bumbo. The way those things are designed leave the mess pretty much nowhere to go but up. My boy had an incident like that and I swear, the mess reached all the way up to his neck.

I told one new father that he needed to make sure he had at least 3 sets of crib sheets. When he asked why I asked if he had any diaper blowouts yet. When he told me one, I told him to be ready for the night when you get 3 of them between 12 and 4 am.

The look on his face was priceless.

Our first managed a few blowouts that required a hair washing.

Sorry about that, yo. That's honestly nothing, though. There will be days when one of you doesn't even realize you have baby poop on your shirt because your adorable newborn was practicing pooping for distance as soon as you took his/her diaper off.

They are the best inventions ever, babies. And some of the grossest.

The college fund is an EXCELLENT idea. Wish I would've contributed more to our kids'. Everyone says your life will completely change, and its true. You think you can imagine it, but you can't.

I am very thankful that I worked in the infant room at a daycare for awhile..so the gross factor for diapers isn't so bad now....but I am sure there are things I am not ready for....like puking....:swoon:
