My wife's only symptom right now is farting. They are so bad it would make an attacking bear think twice. I'm serious. Not even trying to be funny. Makes my eyes water.

The baby books say that is normal...and may be worse/more frequent as the time goes....:wideeyed:

Oh, the smells. That lasted all pregnancy long for me. I already have a very strong sense of smell, but stuff would push me over the edge during pregnancy, I'd gag. We almost had to get rid of our rabbit.

There is one smell that really really bothers me, and I don't understand why. My mom washed some clothes for me using an organic and supposedly nonsmelly soap...but I can't stand the smell! Oh well:rolleyes:

Congrats! Hopefully subsequent tests will give you the same positive answer.

There really is no real preparation after you've done the things like buy diapers, carseat, ect. With our first we were anxious to get home from the hospital--the nurses were always in ever few hours, no one was getting sleep. We figured if we were home in our own environment things would be better. Wrong. ;) We got home late afternoon/early evening and none of us got sleep until about 8am the next day.

Get your wife a pregnancy journal. I found them to be helpful to write stuff down. Then if you ever have another one, you can look back and remember when things happened during pregnancy. Did one for the first two and wished I would've done one for the third.

Get them started as a Cyclone from day one. :)

Congratulations!!!!!! (maybe)

Usually she knew in a few weeks with morning sickness, and other signs.

There is no preparation. Your life totally changes; priorities, free time, fears, excitement, etc... But it is all worth it, and it is an awesome ride. Savor every new victory - sitting up, crawling, standing up, walking, first word, first sentence, etc..... And try to help with 60% of the work.....your wife is going to go through 8+ sucky months.....you owe it to her.
Whoa, let's not get carried away here. :wideeyed:

Hopefully congrats are in order - you might want to call your doctor and ask what lab they want your pregnancey test at. It takes longer but the doctor will want an official result, no matter what a home pregnancy kit says.

My advice would be to get your financial house in order. Get a will, power of attorney, etc. drawn up now because it takes a while and you won't have time later. Also start the college fund (a 529 gets my vote) as soon as the baby is born. We did a monthly direct deposit for each kid and it has made paying for college sooo much easier.

The best advice I ever got about babies came from a co-worker just before I delivered. I was pretty nervous because I new nothing about kids, especially infants. She told me not to worry to much about being the perfect parent because your baby is new to everything too and he won't be able to tell if you know what you are doing or not either.

We just found out my wife is pregnant last Tuesday! Went to the doctor on Monday to confirm it. Our first also! She took two tests 5 days before Aunt Flo came because she knew something was up. Both positive. I was out of town so she texted me a picture of the test early in the morning... Imagine waking up to that! Sounds like your wife is prego too.

Congrats, I hope to follow your path, my wife texted me a picture of the test, and on my phone I couldn't tell what it was very well so I'm like what's that exactly, lol.

Thanks for the help everyone, some great ideas in here.

Re-test early in the morning for highest levels of the hormone.

Work my butt off getting things set up now, haha.

Pregnancy journal is interesting, hadn't heard of that one!

Currently the wife is very gassy, which is uhm unusual, and sore breasts.

And take folic acid daily!

Sore breasts are one of the most common early signs. Also swollen.

Check the test directions, too. Ours said very clearly that it didn't matter how dark the plus was. What mattered was the plus.

Sounds like you already know the answer, so congratulations!

This is the journal I used for our first (9 years ago). You should be able to find it at Target or a bookstore, or of course amazon. Speaking of amazon, you can sign up for a program called Amazon Mom. You save on diapers in bulk and get free prime shipping for at least three months. When I signed up last year, you could earn a free month of prime for every $25 you spent up to a year. I will hit a year in Aug. I found that the diapers we use (Pampers) were cheaper through amazon's subscribe and save program than any sale at Target even with coupons. Of course some choose to cloth diaper, lots of choices that route but I prefer disposables.

Before you go shopping or do any registries, you might want to make a list of the bigger-ticket items and the other stuff you'll need. We did that, and it started to put things in perspective early.

Also, I think that walking into Babies-R-Us or a store like it could be overwhelming if you're not a little bit ready.

Good advice. I would also personally wait well into the second trimester to buy much stuff, and even then there aren't guarantees. Just my opinion, though.

Yeah, no reason to accumulate to early. It's good to be prepared early.

If you buy a crib, read the directions for amusement, but not for help. Those things are not written to be helpful. They're more like a torture device.

The crib really went together when I put those aside.

Sleep now. Don't worry about buying stuff that the baby might not like - stuff like sleep sacks and swaddles. We bought a ton of those and my son hated them from day one.
Starting now, just be as steady as you can. My wife told me just the other day that the best thing I did during her pregnancy and the year after was to stay as even keeled as possible. It helps because your wife's hormones are going to have her all over the place emotionally for a while.

Get some or all of the following books.

Baby Bargains
Expecting 411
Baby 411

You can buy them at this link, or check places like Amazon.

Baby Bargains saved us a ton of money when it came to registering for our first, as the suggested lists you get from baby stores are full of crap you will never use. This also helped from falling into the trap of some of the hyped up brands of strollers, car seats, etc.

The other two 411 books were great for all the WTF moments that will come up over the next 3 years.

For yourself, check out this program. Boot Camp For New Dads Nothing will help your wife more than being prepared and capable.

If you have friends/family that already have children maybe they could loan you their baby books too. I now have three, two are the same and the third one came from my Dr at my first appointment.

Since it is summer, you could grab nutral baby clothes/items for really cheap...if you want to get a head start. My thought has been don't turn down free stuff, unless it is obviously in bad condtion (small stains don't count).

We have gotten a lot of hand me down things that are still in really good conditon!

Folic acid, and reading books added. If it's a boy we should have lots of hand me downs. I have priced cribs and all that :eek:, apparently they go through a lot of diapers too ehh
