Big 12 Expansion: The Quiet And The Storm

Clemson is the quiet one.

The decision has been made and they're Big 12 bound.

No drama at Clemson. Clemson's football staff have been notified of an impending move and they're fine with it.

If you want drama look to Tallahassee.

FSU's Board of Trustees have butted heads with the president and made their desire to exit the ACC known.

Make no mistake, Florida State wants to move, but President Eric Barron has found it very difficult to pull the trigger.

He likes the ACC, he really does. He likes being in the same conference as North Carolina and Duke (for academic reasons). He is concerned how FSU's faculty would react to move and wants them to understand that academics are a priority at FSU.

What he doesn't like is the pitiful TV contract the ACC managed to beg from ESPN.

Both Eric Barron and the Board of Trustees understand that the ACC, going forward, puts FSU at a distinct competitive advantage.

If you don't believe that consider that FSU will be playing for one of four playoff spots.

FSU, and schools throughout the nation, must decide if they want to contend for one of those four playoff spots and be willing to spend the money necessary to compete.

Florida State has resources and a giant athletic department budget, but so do Alabama, LSU, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and the ramifications for FSU's continued membership in the ACC are profound.

Their peers will be receiving significantly more in television revenues each and every year. And that's why the Board of Trustees at FSU will force Barron's hand and FSU will join Clemson as new members of the Big 12.

The deal is done.

Some notes:

  • The Big 12 contract maybe as much as $25 million per school and fully vested by year 3.
  • The Contract has an automatic clause triggering renegotiation with the addition of a #13th member.
  • ESPN and Fox have the advised Big 12 on who to add and further expansion depends on value and who's available.
  • If the right "value-added" teams are not available the Big 12 will not expand.
  • Miami has said no. Their president plans to reduce the investment in football and worries aobut NCAA violations.
  • Georgia Tech is now a serious candidate for 13 and talks are progressing.
  • Louisville and Cincinnati are no longer under consideration.

Surprising at Louisville. They seemed like a reasonable #14 regional to link Kansas school, Iowa State and WVU.

Not to mention it gives B12 two of the top 7 basketball revenues and eventually a basketball rivalry only eclipsed by UNC/Duke. A new mid-sized TV market we're not in already. 13 teams, 3 ACC schools, and no Louisville would be completely idiotic.

Dibs on ISU being in the division where we only have to beat 5 teams instead of 6. That's really fair and ideal.

If all that stuff is true, then sign me up for a Big 14 with Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech... with a $30 million (or more) per school TV contract.

Kind of hard believe we would take FSU, Clemson and GT, then stop at awkward 13 with Louisville sitting there in a medium sized new TV market, above average football resources and perhaps #1 basketball resources/gate.

If Louisville would be #13 I can see them out, 3 ACC teams jump and Louisville is in. I also could see 2 ACC teams, then 2 more later, just can't see 3 ACC teams and that's it with no Louisville.

If we take those 3 we might as well go after someone bigger than Louisville. Pitt would make alot more sense. Or if we can get into NC or Virginia/Maryland. Louisville is a backup plan. I don't get why so many people want Louisville.

Here's my first shot at a Big 14 divisional split... North/South

Would have protected crossover rivalries as well, to keep Bedlam.

Yep. And I just found out from Reddit this weekend Louisville basketball is insanely profitable.

While that is generally true, Louisville basketball is the most profitable in the country by a wide margin. In fact, last year, Louisville BASKETBALL made a profit of US$27,551,289. For comparison, Ohio State FOOTBALL made US$26,463,498.

Source.

Would be an easy 14 pick in my mind.

That makes more sense than what this guy is saying. Stopping at 13 like the guy suggests with Louisville being "out" doesn't make any sense.

I think Louisville is a better add than Pitt. Program on the rise versus a program in decline. Their athletic budget and attendance in all sports is higher, top dog in a medium size city where Pitt is an afterthought to pro sports in a not much bigger market. Much better geographic fit. Much more realistic that Louisville football can dominate UK than Pitt football will ever be significant again vs. Steelers and PSU.

I agree with either VT or UVA being a massive score if we have Clemson/FSU/GT.

Louisville's football attendance, stadium capacity and overall athletic budget are way higher than people perceive. Their football upside absolutely crushes most of the other "basketball" schools out there.

I'm not saying we go to 11 just to add them, but it's stupid to sit at 13 if they could be 14. I could see if 2 or 4 acc teams are a better way though.

I don't think that would work because you would put all 3 national brands in one division. FSU, UT, and OU.

Even my map of 16 from yesterday had some problems.

OU and UT in one division and FSU in the other. Split the Texas school into sets of 2. Other schools I don't know how they would slit.

I don't think he's suggesting that we stop at 13. What he's saying is that the contract escalator clause doesn't kick in until we expand beyond 12. And who those candidates are will be determined by ESPN/Fox based on revenue producing value, not where they are located. Think "electronic footprint".

KSU-KU
ISU-WVA
OSU-OU
FSU-Texas
GTech-Clemson
TCU-Baylor
