I hope the players get a chance to read this. No doubt the coaching staff is trying to impart the central thesis of this which is; ISU cannot control the talent or strength of other teams but they CAN control their own attention to detail. They can (and must) play mistake free and they can (and must) decide to be the hardest working team in the Big 12.

well, they have to cover so long they’re being scouted by the cross country team.

I disagree with this. OU QB was doing 3 step drops and hammering the wide receiver screen all day on us. They had to cover for .05 seconds. Problem was they were playing 10 yards back. OTherwise good column.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in those coaches meetings after they broke down tape on OU and tried to decide where we could align our relative strengths with there relative, ahemm weaknesses.

What is your best guess of what would happened had our defensive backs played more press coverage?

Point being that it is a risk/reward decision and not just a cut and dry "why don't you defend them closer to the line" talk.

One could almost make the point that playing closer to the line might get our defense off the field, and that would be nice. They need a break.

I agree that we would have been burnt deep. However, the article was saying that our defense had to cover them for a long time. I did not agree with that. OU ran a very short passing game much of the time.

I agree that OU was running a lot of short passes, but they were getting them off so fast that the DB still were running to get back into position before the next snap came.

Agreed. They weren't so much passes as long, forward handoffs.

Guys like Bruns is one reason I'm a Cyclone for life. Boy, wish he was on the staff! He really is one of us, just like Fred.

Great read Ben!

This needs to be posted publicly so all Iowa State fans can see what it is like to truly bleed the cardinal and gold. Ben has given everything to this program and then some. He is a voice of reason and also of criticism. He never sugar coats it. If we are terrible he says it and vice versa. Way to go Brunsy!!
