I was an ATO at somewhere other than Iowa State and overall it was a good experience. The Greek system at my undergrad was nice in that it was small and relatively d-bag free. It was more or less a place for you and a bunch of your buddies to hang out and drink with more relaxed rules. I generally stayed away from some of the dumb, overly-organized stuff such as Yell Like Hell, Greek Olympics, Greek Week, etc. I made alot of good friends there, and the connections been helpful as I transition into "adult" life.

(Iowa State Daily) (U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa -- The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity national organization has temporarily suspended four unidentified members of their Iowa State chapter for alleged sexual misconduct.

The sanctions were approved by the ISU chapter on Sunday.

SAE national spokesman Benjamin Lewis said the suspensions are the result of "very strong allegations," adding that the suspended members have been asked to leave the premises of the fraternity's residence at 140 Lynn Ave.

This is a really, really crappy comparison. Ignore this.

(coming from somebody very involved in a few on campus clubs)

IcSyU, what's your deal? It's like I can't post anything on any thread without you downplaying my comments. :skeptical:

I was in a fraternity for all 4 years while I was at ISU and I was also extremely involved in multiple student organizations (and even a national officer for one professional society). The original post was asking about time commitments, and this comparison IS a good one.

Nothing like mudslinging with no facts. Didn't you say you were a Beta?

I'm not denying one guy didn't do it, but saying "They" as in the "Fraternity" sponsored it or many members were in fact "raping" is a gross overstatement.

I'm not an SAE but had some friends from their house and overall they were good guys. "Rapists" are not something I would have considered them while I was a member of the Greek community, maybe in 1998.

Fraternity threads are fun.

That happened at Drake. I believe the person who started the thread is going to Iowa State University. These are two separate universities.

This is very true. Iowa State has one of the best Greek systems in the Midwest, with both Inter-Fraternity Council (guys) and Collegiate Panhellenic Council (women) winning their respective awards for Greek community life once again this last year. Drake can't hold a candle to ISU in terms of the Greek community.

That said, it's all about the house you join. I'm a senior at Phi Kappa Theta here at ISU and I can say with a fact that in my 3+ years here, I have never been hazed nor had someone in my fraternity been hazed. I have heard accusations of houses doing activities that would be considered "hazing" (the naked run that's been mentioned, acts that would be unbecoming of gentlemen, forced excessive drinking), but SAE, the house the OP has decided to join, has never been associated with those rumors. I know a couple of guys in SAE, they are your typical popular guy type mold (athletic, outspoken, etc.) and SAE has a magnificent house.

And I would take the word of a Greek about the Greek community than a non-Greek every day of the week, it's a different world than going through the residence halls/apartments system in college.

Fraternity threads are the best

Take advantage of the guys in the house who are working towards the same degree. It's nice having a resource there who can give you tips on what to take, when to take it etc. This means ask the guys who have a good GPA, not Bluto, although he did become a senator :jimlad:.

Hey, guys let's leave the attacks at the door, ok? The OP said he's already joined a frat, and is looking for info on what he can expect. Let's not make this a debate on the merits of the greek system.

Thanks.

Boy I'm glad I read this before I commented.

I came down in '76 during senior year in high school and stayed at SAE for Veisha. It was a riot. I was going to join the next year, then went to the dorm for a semester or two. Stayed at Fulmer in Linden Hall for three years. It was a blast too. I guess its what you make it.
