How do Iowa State fans react if four years from now Cyclone basketball under Hoiberg isn't faring much if any better than it was under the McDermott regime? What if ISU still isn't being invited to the dance? Or if Iowa State is still among the lower tier of teams in the Big 12? How will you react?
I know I will get crucified for saying this, but I will anyway. Having moved to central Iowa a dozen years ago, I have found Cyclone fans (as a general rule) to be among the most fickle and certainly amongst the least loyal of any fan base I have ever seen.
With Fred Hoiberg being among the most revered of all former Iowa State players, regardless of sport, if he fails to bring the program to where you want it to be, do you turn on him? Personally, I think once again this shows the immense failure of Jamie Pollard. I'm afraid Pollard has once again painted himself into a corner. If Hoiberg fails, fans will most likely turn on him and one of Iowa State's best will leave Ames with a tarnished reputation.
It's a tough, tough situation. If I were Hoiberg, I would stay put, keep my reputation in place, and let someone else get crucified in Ames.
