I have the Sony N460 connected via HDMI to my Sony 46W4100. I will look at my settings again, maybe I missed something in the setup if it's that obvious in picture quality difference.

Yeah, you should clearly be seeing a difference there.

Do you have an audio system as well? If so, are you hearing a difference?

I've seen several of the older 60gb PS3s for sale used for around $200. Any thoughts on these? It seems like a good deal since they are compatable with PS2 and older games (i.e. cheaper games). I'd mainly be buying it for the Blu-Ray though, so I wouldn't want to give up on quality of picture to save a few bucks.

That's the model I have. There is no difference between the quality of bluray players between the old one and the new ones. I've yet to see any reason why any of the new PS3's are better than the 60gb except being smaller.

The only real thing you're giving up is the warranty. If the 60gb breaks (rare) you're out $200.

Thanks for the information!

Not all 60gb model are fully compatible with PS2 games I don't think, somewhere in there they changed from Hardware emulation to software, the original hardware ones are fully compatible, the software ones are only for the games they choose to support.

And I don't know this, but I'm not 100% sure what kind of HDMI connection the original PS3's had, I know the newest ones are 1.3a

All 60gb have the hardware based backwards compatibility. The 60gb was replaced by the 80gb and it has software based backwards compatibility, which has some trouble with some games.

Every PS3 ever made uses 1.3a.

Oops my bad, there was a 60gb unit with software emulation, but it was only released overseas it would seem.

I could be wrong but I remember there being a big stink when they "upgraded" to the 80gb and went with the software emulation.

The backwards compatabilty thing is nice but in all honesty, I rarely use it. The PS2 games are just are not cut out for HD compared to the PS3 games. I'll once in awhile play Gods of War or Tourist Trophy just because I like them so much.

Yeah when the upgraded the US 60gb for the 80gb they ditched hardware emulation. But the 60gb in Europe didn't come out at the same time, it came out near the time the 80gb in the US came out. And I agree, once you get a PS3 I really doubt you use the PS2 games very often, they just don't look good enough to bother.

People mentioned being able to hook up to your home network and watching hulu/netflix/etc. with PS3, do you know if the old 60gb machines have the same compatabilities as the newer models? Thanks.

Yes, you can network and netflix. I've never did the hulu thing on it.

I'm also interested in the Hulu thing.

EDIT: Looks as though the only way is using PlayON - a $40 one time purchase. Hulu is no longer provided any other way unless you do some fancy reconfig which I prefer to stay away from.
