There is one in Iowa City but it just doesn't taste the same. Probably the atmosphere. :wink0st:

I'll never forget the time a delivery driver from "The Pit" left his car in drive and it rolled into the side of Helser. I gave him a big tip that time.

I took my 7 yr old there before the Kansas basketball game this past year and IMO it was not near as good as it was back in the good old days.

I hope Pizza Pit was way better back in the day or something because during my time at ISU ('99-'06) I really didn't think it was much better than ordering a frozen pizza. I mean it was convenient if you were hanging out at Welch Ave. Station but their pizza is average at best. Of course I'm not on the Papa John's bandwagon like the rest of the world either so maybe I'm just weird....

As a college student, The Pit had 2 of the qualities you were looking for: Cheap (maybe not as cheap as Home Team but there was no Home Team back then) & Fast.

As for the pizza, the first time I tried their pizza it was explained to me this way:

'It's kind of like mold. It grows on you after awhile"

Now if you please excuse me, I have to finish my lunch. A couple of leftover Pizza Pit slices...

I can see how you might like it more if you ate it regularly. Part of the reason that I didn't like it that much is because I didn't think it was that cheap in price, however it was cheap in quality. I mean I guess those late night specials are a decent deal but they're really not that much cheaper than "regular" pizza places.

You are missing the 4th piece of that puzzle making it the "Quadrangle" and it almost brings me to tears bringing it up.

I was there between 86 and 91 and DaVinci's was the best place to eat pizza at in town in my opinion. Made it there at least twice a year since graduating until I decided to take my parents out there 2 years ago and, much to my dismay, it was replaced by a Chinese joint. Now if that ain't a Crock of "Hawkeye", I don't know what is.

Pizza Pit was a one of the staple diets down there as well. I took my 7 yr old there before the Kansas basketball game this past year and IMO it was not near as good as it was back in the good old days.

I used to work at DaVinci's so I got half price everything! I ate extremely well for a year.

Ah, the cheesesteak hoagies were delicious. & an artery clogger

Unfortunately, DaVinci's couldn't keep their heads above water. Which isn't much of a shock when toward the end of their run they had specials of 25 cent (?) cheesesteak hoagies with each one you bought at regular price. The same deal for their pizzas

I delivered for DaVincis for a couple semesters - good place, but you could tell it was headed downhill, when a pizza place in a college town is only making 15-20 deliveries a night its headed downhill ... I once drove 109 miles during a single 8 hour shift at Domi-hoes.

Great Plaines is king, followed by Happy Hanks (joes) Taco - I've never even heard of Georges?? - Pit late night special should be in everyones speed dial, dominos will sell you a pizza for a nickel but its craptastic.

Other late night food, anyone remember the last good Pancheros on Welsh where Mickeys is now? The huge lines for the El Gordos at 2AM ...
Anyone whos been to one of the chain Pancheros that are open now - this one was so much better they're pretty much a waste of space now.

I worked at Dominhoes one summer, I did 100+ miles during long shifts too. Mileage credit was good, did you feel like a stripper with a massive wad of one dollar bills at home? :laugh8kb:

Thumb's was an awesome bar in the 80s. I spent many a drunk night at that place. I was even there the last night it was open. I used the leg from a chair I broke to destroy one of the ceiling fans downstairs. :biggrin9gp: Lots of people were tearing that bar apart to take home momentos. I still had the chair leg until I got married. The wife didn't buy that it was a cherised college keepsake... LOL

Once upon a time there was a Pizza Pit in Ankeny. When they closed the owner called me up and asked me if I wanted to buy the place since me and my two roommates were their #1 customers. I declined and took that as a sign. Joined the YMCA the next day!!

Pizza Pit was the bomb when I was in school. $5 1 topping pizza's after 9pm late night special, the best wings in town, and some really yummy hot sandwiches.

I could go for some Gumby Pokey Stix too. We used plan plan our floor meetings on that night and we'd order a bunch of 2 for 1 pokey stixs for our meetings.

Thumbs closed in spring of 1987, or fall of 1987. Can't remember which. Great, great college bar. People's reminds me a lot of the old Thumbs.

Of course in my time People's was People's Drug Store. Great place to pick up a 12 pack of The Beast for $2.99 to drink while walking home from class...

They might just have relocated. There was a "Thumbs" still on West Street when I graduated 2 years ago.

Minsky's was the best way back in the late 70's. By far the best pizza. Pizza Pit first opened up while I was at ISU. They always had coupons in the Iowa State Daily. Plus they delivered.

There is a Thumbs on West Street which was "my bar" when I lived on Campus Avenue. It is the size of a postage stamp however, but they still had the tabletop Pac-Man there.
