Volleyball Questions

I just purchased VB season tickets for the 1st time. I've been to a few games over the last several years and always enjoyed it, so thought I's make a commitment to go to more games. Anyway, could someone answer some questions for me in simple terms (not rule book speech). What are the restrictions for back row players, and more specifically the restrictions for the Libero? Looking forward to my seat assignment and the games.

Post-Spring Top 25 - The Athletic

14. Iowa State
QB Brock Purdy was the nation’s sixth-rated passer as a true freshman. Early enrollee RB Breece Hall will help fill the void left by David Montgomery. Replacing star WR Hakeem Butler remains a concern. The Cyclones return eight starters from the Big 12’s No. 2 defense, led by DE JaQuan Bailey and S Greg Eisworth. Redshirt freshman LB Will McDonald, who played in four games last season, will play a major role.
Others of note:
4) Oklahoma
7) Texas
18) Iowa

Let's Hope That Madison Wise and Ashley Joens Learned from Bridget Carleton...

the importance of hard work.

I am excited about the future of WBB at ISU. Getting Ines back for another year is nice and the class of true and RS Freshman will inject some new talent. And I expect Adriana and Kristin Scott to have solid seasons next year.

But I think the critical element will be the ability of Madison Wise and Ashley Joens to improve and fill in the gap that will be left without Bridget.

Let's just hope that their numbers get better with age as they did for Bridget. Here are some of Bridget's Senior year statistics compared to her career averages as a Cyclone...

FG % - 47% vs. a career average of 41%
3-Pt % - 37% vs. 34%
Rebounds/Game - 8.6 vs. 7.0
Assists/Game - 4.0 vs. 2.8
Points/Game - 21.7 vs. 17.3
Blocks per year - 43 vs. 31
Steals per year - 79 vs. 53

Seniors are typically better players than they were as underclassmen, but it is not always as impressive as Bridget's progression was. Let's hope she rubbed off on her teammates.

Becoming a fan of a new team

Not sure why this came to mind right now, but it's something I've wondered about. Has anyone else ever had trouble becoming a fan of a new team? I've been watching hockey since the 2010 Olympics, and in the NHL, the Blackhawks were the obvious choice to root for in Iowa City. But I wouldn't call myself anything more than a casual fan, despite genuinely liking the team and the sport. I just don't feel the same sort of connectivity with the Blackhawks as I do the Cubs or Hawkeyes, or even Iowa State or the Bears (I don't really care that much about the NFL, but I grew up with the Bears every Sunday because my dad is a fan). The highs don't feel as high; even during their Cup runs, I couldn't get *really* excited without it feeling a little forced compared to how I feel during Iowa or Cubs games.

For the people who started watching a new sport and picking a favorite team like that, did you have similar experiences? Does that ever change, or does it always just feel different than it does for the teams you grew up with?

Iowa State Center Redevelopment: Power & Light 2.0???

The Iowa State Center plan (public space near Hilton) has no traction and it seems some different visioning is needed. Cities like Lincoln (and KC on a bigger scale) have built public entertainment spaces near sports venues with a lot of success, despite having different sized cities and different land situations.

What we have now:

Samsung S8 - Update to Android Pie?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 thru US Cellular and I see that Samsung has released a version of Android 9 (Pie) to its Galaxy S8 phones. Sounds like Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are already updating their S8s to Android 9 (Pie). I have not been able to learn whether or not US Cellular will release an update to their S8s...therefore I am guessing they won't. That said...is it possible for me to update my S8 to Android 9 on my own using a guide or the files found through various websites? If I followed the instructions correctly would my phone still function as normal? Or would I lose my service with US Cellular?

I have no problems with my phone right now...but I just like to get new technology when I can. I am locked into US Cellular for awhile...so thought this might be a fun thing to do if it was even possible!

Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor breweries 2018

I'll start this by saying that I'm no longer going to try to keep up with what is going on in Iowa City/Coralville, so if anyone else wants to do a writeup on that area, have at it.

Cedar Rapids:

- Backpocket Pilot Pub - I visited this place twice when it first opened, and then again late last summer. By the late summer visit, their food standards had fallen and there was a very reduced (in offerings) food menu. Same things on tap. This pub was established to be a small brewery where Backpocket could have a few experimental offering (beer wise). Believe it has failed in that mission.

- Clocktower Brewery - apparently a back room bar at the very large 'Black Sheep Social Club' (a restaurant). As of this writing, they are in their infantcy and has just opened. I haven't visited, and know of no one who has, so cannot comment about the beer which is apparaently also available to those who dine at Black Sheep.

- Iowa Brewing Company - Their beers are much better than when they first opened. They are expanding their production and at this point is probably the largest production facility in Cedar Rapids.

- Lion Bridge Brewing - Though they have remained consistent and stable, they too are now adding more brewing capacity to their brewery. For a while, another brewer who has some local brewing cache was also using their facilities. I don't know if that alliance continues.

- Quarterbarrel Brewery - Their prices keep escalating, and while I found a beer of theirs that I felt was marginally good, it wasn't good enough to keep returning for. I think they still do sell a lot of their own beer. But it is hard to tell if they make their real money on their own beer; the large selection of beers that you probabally can't get anywhere else in Cedar Rapids; from their large collection of working old style arcade games; or from their overpriced and undersized food offerings.

- Third Base Brewery and Eatery - Though I have never liked most of their basic beers, they do continue to experiment and put out some very incredible beers. The latest is an Oatmeal Imperial Stout with a 13%Abv. Early samples tasted a lot like barley wine. Later samples have the oatmeal profile taking over.

- Turner Alley of course has been closed for a year +/-.

- Another Road Brewing (Marion). The Marion location where they spent a lot of money revitalizing an old building, is closed. My understanding is that there is still brewing happening at their Cedar Rapids brewing facility, but I don't know if that is under the Another Road name, or a contract to a more successful brewer, or is simply brewing being done by the former owners for their own consumption.

Solon
- Big Grove brewery soldiers on quite successfully in Solon Iowa, but has opened a quite successful location in Iowa City/Coralville.

- Stone City Brewing (always located in Solon) Is a brewery that was once active in Solon with a tasting room and brewery. Nearly every year since the closure of this brewery, its former owner/brewmaster has brewed his 'Aaahh Bock' at some eastern Iowa brewery. This year is no different. Both Iowa Brewing Company and Backpocket Brewing have invited him in to brew his beer, and to perform, 'The Blessing of the Bock' comedic ritual at their breweries. Saturday Feb 24 was the ritual at Iowa Brewing Company. I believe the ritual at Backpocket in Iowa City/Coralville is set for March (contact Backpocket).

Amana
- Millstream, the oldest brewery in Iowa, continues on mostly unchanged. Their increased capacity and new bottler have helped improve their product. They did purchase the Colony Inn last year. After a small remodel there, the restaurant is open again. The sample room at the brewery is also still open (in season).

Posts of the month: April 2019

A few of my favorite CF comments and quotes from April 2019. Some entries are edited for brevity or clarity. If you know of notable quips I missed, post as you wish.

For the next rundup, I might do only one for May thru July. I don’t view as many threads during that part of offseason.

And away we go! :)

From the thread “First bracketology (for 2020)”
@Cy$: Iowa as a 3 seed? Joe needs to stop drinking.
@cycloneeric: Or at least stop drinking with Jerry Palm.

From the thread “Friday OT: A matter of time”
@RunninMan: The only food I absolutely won't eat is rhubarb. I'm a disappointment to church ladies everywhere.

From the thread “NFL draft 2019”
@GTO: Does South Harmon Institute of Technology have a wide receiver in the draft? Because I'm 100% sure he would be picked before Butler.

From the thread “Friday OT: You’re just a turd out there”
@Angie: Try shaving your knee in the shower while getting everything AND not cutting yourself, and you'll see why I liked it.
@BCClone: I don’t think I have hair on my knees and I’m not pulling my pants down to check.

@coolerifyoudid: The other day while I was getting ready for work, I got a toe hooked on the inseam of my pants while putting a leg in and ended up doing the Humpty Dance in my bedroom.

From the thread “Campustown Question”
@Walden4Prez: I was in Campustown over the weekend and I thought about going into the CVS bathroom and puking in the sink for old times sake.

From the thread “Weekly mailbag rapid-fire”
@jcyclonee: … Wasn’t it decided Fitzy looks like the Crowded House dude?
@Fitzy: I wholeheartedly believe I do not look like that guy. @cyhiphopp was on bath salts when he said that.

From “Official March Madness Thread”
(following national championship game)
@CyDude16: Sucks to suck, Tech fans.
@awd4cy: If only we could suck like them.

From the thread “Introducing the Kyle Kempt T-shirt”
@GetAwesome: So can I safely presume Kyle is getting a split of this revenue generated? Which obviously will be in the millions.
...
@CycloneNorth: When are the Steele Jantz cutoffs coming?

From the thread “Submit questions for 4/10 mailbag”
@coolerifyoudid: What's your cyclonefanatic password? Feel free to put it in a spoiler, so not everyone can see it.
@Fitzy: SPOILER

From the thread “Vacuum recommendations”
@3TrueFans: They all suck.

From the thread “What Could Have Been If…”
@Knownothing: Any big game, I have to watch by myself … If we win, I’m the guy who runs outside and starts screaming. If we lose, I can deal with my emotions and not worry about people who don't get sports.
@jmb: This is almost exactly what I do. I have one guest, typically — a Navy buddy, Captain Morgan.

From the thread “Becoming a fan of a new team”
@I-stateTheTruth: The most natural ways for this to feel comfortable: (1) If you move to a new area and start to attend games (2) If a favorite player goes to a different team … or (3) for extreme cases, if you sleep with a cheerleader of the team, you can develop an affection for that squad.

From the thread ”Official Montgomery and Butler NFL”
@rhoho: With that, round 3 Is over. Does we really have this bad of relationships with NFL?
@Blandboy: We doesn’t.

From the thread “Wheeler impressed by Iowa State”
@ribsnwhiskey: Don’t put anything past Tom Crean. He's a snake. … No offense to snakes.

From the thread “Grassley: I voted 7 times to repeal…”
@3TrueFans: Grassley looking good, doesn't look a day over 200.
@deadeyededric: Show some respect. The man is a Civil War veteran!

From the thread “Insider: Grad transfers & a coaching nugget”
@Dandy: If Lindell comes back, I hope he still buys into the 6th man role. He probably doesn’t start over Haliburton or Nixon and he isn’t a 3. Anyone agree?
@Dandy: You’re an idiot.

Summer Recruiting Problems re the Live Period

Sounds like the NCAA's attempt to change summer recruiting isn't going so well.
https://kansas.rivals.com/news/three-point-play-texas-tech-ncaa-s-goat-rodeo-tristan-enaruna

"As anybody who follows recruiting knows, the NCAA decided to change how summer recruiting works. A reaction and look into change after all that has been exposed during the FBI trials regarding college cheating was both warranted and understandable. The solution that was put together by a group with little familiarity with the game has been looking both laughable and nonsensical.

But, I don’t want to do a tap dance on the NCAA here and call them all bad. They were trying to improve the image of the game and I like that even if I disagree with the results. I also want to compliment the NCAA and event directors across the country for what, by all accounts, was a very successful live period over the last weekend. Lots of kids got looks and exposure they deserved and coaches got to see lots of players.

That being said, what is coming in the next few months is looking like a goat rodeo. In short, the NCAA wants power back to high school coaches and added live evaluation periods in June, cut down live events in July from three periods to one and then added a period of NCAA-run camps and USA Basketball at the end of the month. So far, that idea has been a massive flop and I don’t see it turning out very successful.

Several states have already said they want nothing to do with sanctioning June events so there will be thousands of kids left out in the dark in June. College coaches want no part of going to high school events in June either. As for July, well it’s looking potentially disastrous.

I spent all weekend asking college coaches, summer coaches, kids and parents if they have any clear view of how the NCAA camps will work and nobody has any idea. On top of that, the kids I found who are interested in competing in them and the coaches who want to try and evaluate massive numbers of kids in a camp setting (the idea is to get some 2,000 or so players evaluated in four regional camps) are few and far between. The NCAA has asked coaches to nominate players for the camps and the coaches want nothing to do with it. On top of that, I would look for several events to start popping up that will live stream the games and it will basically end up business as usual in July with coaches simply watching on their computers instead of courtside.

It’s not too late to change it (at least I don’t think so) but the time to switch things up is running short. I think it’s too late to change the calendar, but it’s not too late to scrap the regional camps and certify the types of team events we’ve always seen in the past. I would require they be round robin, limit teams to going to one place during the last period and even say no shoe company funding of the events. It would be a much better solution than what is currently in place."
