Travel - Seattle to Portland

Hello Fanatics, another travel thread. I have gotten great travel advice here before (Napa/Sonoma and Europe) so I thought I would see what you all know about the Seattle/Portland areas and between.

We will fly into Seattle and have 8 nights to get to Portland before we fly out. Going in mid-August. We will spend a little time in each city, also planning on going to Mt. Rainer/Mt. Hood and/or possibly Mt. St Helens for hiking, we’ve seen some other scenic hikes to do with some waterfalls, and have been looking at restaurants/bars in the cities. Nothing is set in stone yet, except flights.

We are looking mainly for recommendations on what to do between cities, including vineyard recommendations, where to stay, how to travel (car rental) etc. Also open to city specific advice (neither of us have been there before, but a lot of travel blogs do cover the cities fairly thoroughly).

Thanks!

Campbell and the field

Listening to some of Campbell's comments on the condition of the field over the season, it appears he is not happy with the playing surface on the natural grass.
While I love the natural grass, and I know we have the best in the country, plus I know we have had absolutely horrible conditions this year, some of his comments have made me wonder what his feelings are.
Does anyone think he has started to put pressure on the department to replace the field with Turf? Does he really not like the natural grass or is it just he is discouraged with the conditions due to the weather? Does anyone have any actual knowledge of his preference? What does everyone think, are things starting to lean towards moving back to turf? I hope not, but the field has had a rough year.

What Really Happened to Malaysia's Missing Plane?

Great article in July The Atlantic on why the pilot is most likely behind the disappearance over five years ago. A most likely case scenario has been put forth in the piece. And the little known facts the Malaysian Government may work fiercely to hide and avoid blame in the plane's loss along with its many passengers.

On That Note: The Animals (Part 2): Raining Cats and Dogs

Welcome back to On That Note, a weekly music series hosted by @MeanDean, @cyclones500 and myself.

This week we are returning to our OTN series where we focus on different types of animals. This time we are looking for songs, artists and lyrics with a Cat or Dog reference.

Last week's topic was On That Note - Troubles Seemed So Far Away

Posts of the Month: June 2019

Launching it a bit early this month, so I don't lag the way I did in May.

A few of my favorite comments, dialogue and zingers from CF, June 2019. Some are edited or condensed for clarity or brevity. I also have a bonus entry, doing it separately due to volume.

As usual, if you're aware of any good ones I missed, add to the stack.
From the thread “Posts of the Month: May 2019”
@Sigmapolis: First on the list! Suck, it, haters!
@dosry5: No, you suck it.

(Topic is from May, but comment posted in June)
From “Peterson: Fans Finally Starting To Accept That Fred Is Nebraska Coach”
@cycloneeric: I’m finally starting to accept that this is a thread.

From “Favorite Movies That Predate You”
by @Cyched: Which movies do you like that came out before you were born? If you’re an old fart, any classic movies will do.”
@CycloneErik: Two questions: 1. Define "predate." 2. Is it even possible for @ImJustKCClone to answer the original question?

Nominated by @CYCLNST8 (lost track of the thread title)
@Acylum: Teddy Atlas says this fight will set back physical fitness 100 years.

From “On That Note: For the Birds”
@ BoxsterCy: What, no “Disco Duck” yet?
cyclones500: Well, here’s your chance!
BoxsterCy: There are, surprisingly, some levels I can't bring myself to stoop to.
@jcyclonee: (posts “Disco Duck”) I’ll go there. I have no standards. Except I won't stoop to Anne Murray level. I guess I have some standards.

From “Essential Household Items”
@cycopath25: … The wife chastised me for asking her to pick up deodorant for me … She can't understand why I would want multiple back-up deodorants.
@Acylum: Sounds like you need a backup wifey.

From “Front Pocket Wallets” (started by @cycopath25)
@knowlesjam: Front… use double flip leather wallet and keep cards, pictures and $'s to a manageable number...wife helps with keeping the $ number low.
@chadly82: Are there any (wives) who aren’t good at that?
@cyhiphopp: Hell, my ex-wife is even still good at that.
@VeloClone: I used to have a stuffed wallet, but now have a thin one … I carry my stack in a money clip separately. It is pretty easy when my 'stack' is usually around $12.

From “Let’s start a new Hickory Park debate”
@imaclone2: Been going there for 40 years and ordering the same thing. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm predictable?
@andybernard: Better than Jacob Park.

From “Tyrus McGee dunk”
@Stewo: I do this all the time to my 5-year-old on the 4-foot Playskool hoop. Big deal.

From “Mid-Week Mailbag (6-19): THT and the Draft…”
@Fitzy: Welcome to NBA Draft week, where everything’s made-up and the Knicks don’t matter.

From “Boomers wondering what millennials have planned… ”
@mtowncyclone13: Fun fact: i've never actually seen avocado toast — only people talking about millennials eating avocado toast.

From “Would you take a non-lethal gunshot wound to the thigh…”
@FarmClone: Am I cool with it? I would do it to myself.
@harimad: Not my thigh, but the thigh of other CF posters, sure. Yes, they may be hurt, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make.
@MeanDean: No deal. I need to know the day/year so I can be sure to get good tickets. I have to BE THERE!
@jcyclonee: Is this a deal with the devil thing where we win a championship and I’m alive but in a vegetative state? I hate the devil.
@coolerifyoudid: I will gladly shoot several of you for a national championship. Hell, I'd pistol-whip a few of you for a Clone Cone.
@rochclone: I would take a single gunshot for football and multiple gunshots for men’s basketball.

From “U2 Concert 9-11-92 Identify Girl Pulled From Audience”
Easier to post the link, too many nuggets to differentiate … although I’ll include one as a starter:
@Cycsk: This may be the most "retired civil engineer" thing ever!

Big 12 Teams Splitting Home Games

Found this on my Google News. Thought it might be of interest to others.

https://www.frogsowar.com/2019/6/26...e-big-12-football-split-cities-for-home-games

Tongue-in-cheek. The author is obviously not actually proposing that teams actually do this. Just showing what it would be like if they did. I do like the proposal for ISU. The Baylor one is pretty appropriate as well. Someone doesn't like Baylor. :)

Haliburton - USA Basketball's U19 Tryouts

I searched and didn't find a thread related to the USA Basketball's U19 tryout Tyrese is currently trying out for in Colorado. Mods feel free to merge is there is one.

Haliburton appears to be playing well so far and making a case for the team.

Based on a not so large sample size of of one workout, it looked to me that the fiercest competition to make the team will come at the point guard spot. By nature of college experience, guys like Iowa State's Tyrese Haliburton, Alabama's Kira Lewis, Baylor's Jared Butler and possibly even Oklahoma State's Isaac Likekele (if they want to try him at point) have a little bit of a leg up on the competition.

But, five-star Sharife Cooper, five-star Jalen Suggs, top 35 Caleb Love and 2020's No. 2 ranked player Cade Cunningham all look to have legitimate shots at making the team.

Cooper impressed with his quickness, shifty ability to create off the dribble and lack of fear against bigger and stronger players. Suggs is physically capable of hanging with the older guys and can score around the rim as well as any of the high school guys. Love has been a work in progress over the last year making the move from shooting to point guard and he looked comfortable playing both spots on Saturday. Also surprising was that he wasn't as far behind the curve from a strength standpoint as I might have expected. Cunningham, well Cunningham looked like he has all spring. Confident, tough, poised and skilled and always making the right call on both defense and offense.

As for the college guys, I loved Haliburton's ability to read the floor. Lewis is incredibly quick and still surprisingly thin but doesn't back down from anybody. Butler is a tough shot maker with strength while Likelele competes on every possession and has all kinds of leadership qualities.

Tyrese should know tomorrow if he made the team

The training camp will be used to determine the official, 12-member roster for the 2019 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Cup Team, which will be selected by the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee.

Finalists for the team are expected to be announced on the morning of June 18, and the team will be named prior to its departure for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Greece on June 24. The FIBA U19 World Cup will take place June 29-July 7 in Heraklion, Greece. Athletes eligible for this team must be U.S. citizens born on or after Jan. 1, 2000.

Details on Iowa State's summer trip to Italy

Release:

AMES, Iowa –The Iowa State men’s basketball team will be traveling overseas this summer for a foreign trip, spending 10 days and nine nights in Italy and playing three games against international competition.

The trip will provide value for a Cyclone squad that could return just two of its top six scorers from last year’s NCAA Tournament team.

“We are excited to be able to take our guys on a trip that will provide them with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime,” head coach Steve Prohm said. “It will give us the opportunity to work with them more on the court in a team setting this summer and allow them to get acclimated to each other. We are grateful that our administration supports us by allowing us to take these trips.”

The trip, which will take place Aug. 10-20, will start in Rome before stops in Florence, Pisa and Venice. While Iowa State’s opponents are yet to be determined, the trip will feature historical and educational stops with tours planned of the Roman Colosseum, Vatican City, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and more.

Iowa State will be making a summer trip for the fourth time in program history. Previously, the Cyclones have traveled to Mexico (2004), Italy (2011) and Spain (2015).

The Cyclones are tentatively scheduled to play games on Aug. 13 in Rome, Aug. 15 in Pisa and Aug. 18 in Vicenza. The schedule and opponents will be confirmed in the month prior to the team departing.

NBA: Official Thread -- Cyclones in the NBA & G-League 2018-19

There is some sentiment for a thread where we can post and comment on "our guys" in the NBA or on 2-way contracts. This can be a place to post TV info, articles, tweets and comments about how the ex-Clones are doing. I'll try to keep track of these things as well as when any of the guys may be playing in cities where there are a lot of alums.

I'm curious to see if Monte and Georges are rotation players early in the season or if they'll have to wait for an opportunity. My guess is Monte, yes, and Georges will have to wait. We've seen a bit of Abdel when the Celtics had injuries; I don't know enough about this year's OKC to know if he has a chance to get on the court for some minutes to start the season.

Training camps open on SEPT 22. I hope I'm remembering everyone but this is where we know guys are signed:

Georges Niang - Utah Jazz; Monte Morris - Denver Nuggets; Abdel Nader - Oklahoma City Thunder; Naz Mitrou-Long - SLC Stars / Utah Jazz; Deonte Burton - Oklahoma City Blue / OKC Thunder.
