CHATTANOOGA, Tenn – Iowa State heavyweight Gannon Gremmel has advanced to the championship match at the Southern Scuffle. The junior took out Appalachian State’s Cary Miller by 3-2 decision with a late takedown in the semifinals.

Heading to the finals and the medal matches, Iowa State (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) is in 17th with 33.5 team points. Gremmel is set to take on Northern Colorado’s Dalton Robertson for the heavyweight title. Wrestling is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT this evening and will be streamed live on FloWrestling.

Semifinals
In his semifinal match against Miller, Gremmel needed all seven minutes to come away with the victory. After trading escapes to begin the second and third periods, Gremmel and Miller were locked at 1-1. Gremmel was warned for his second stall warning, giving Miller a 2-1 advantage. As time expired in the match, Gremmel finished on a low-single attack and notched the takedown to win by 3-2 decision, advancing to the finals.

Round of 12
At 165, Chase Straw took on Rutgers’ Brett Donner with a shot at the podium on the line. In the second period, Donner took Straw to his back, and the initial call on the mat was that Straw was pinned. After review, it was determined that they were out of bounds, and the match was reset with Donner leading 2-1. Straw was able to escape and tie the match at 2-2. Donner went on to take a 3-2 lead with an escape to begin the third and went on to win the match by 3-2 decision.

In the blood round at 184 pounds, Julien Broderson, who was wrestling unattached this week, took on Oklahoma State’s Anthony Montalvo. Montalvo scored on three takedowns in the match. Broderson worked to get to his attack, but Montalvo was able to counter. In the end, it was Montalvo over Broderson, 8-4.
