You get one restaurant that’s closed in Ames to come back…

Not exactly sure.
Good question. And if so, does the firesale pallet still have cases on it?

Anyone else willing to admit to buying Natty Ice cases for $4.99? Best bang for your buck!
I was in on the $5 Bud Ice sale from hyVee. Buddy on the floor backed his pickup up and just loaded it down. Problem was over half the people were under 21 so he had to cart it to his room and at night everyone quietly grabbed theirs since you had to go past the RAs room and he was a stickler for that.

I got out of college around 5 years ago so I can’t really recall any restaurant that has closed from my time, but I did always enjoy the free popcorn from the district. Though not paying your employees isn’t a good business plan.

I am sadden that fajita man closed his food stand and it seems like super dog is gone as well. So my vote would be the return of those two famed food stands.

Spirits & Provisions for crab legs.
Kings Food Host best hamburgers.
We had a King's Food Host here in Albert Lea circa 1970. Was my favorite burger - I recall a peppery taste. Didn't last long, Godfather's wound up in the space, now they're gone, building was in a low spot and this year was razed and the site is now a run-off pond. Progress.

I was surprised when they closed because it always seemed to be busy when we were there. Granted, the last time was probably a couple years before they closed. Unique atmosphere and whatnot should have made it viable. But I guess that’s the story of most closed restaurants.

They said their landlord chose not to renew their lease or something. Then the place sat vacant for a few years, so a great call.

I think we (more I) was getting cases of Meister Brau long necks and red, white, and blue for 3.99. Basically an hour of work to get a case of beer. Got barley chunks once in a while, but that kept you from ordering pizza.
Back in college we had a department Christmas party and everyone was supposed to bring a wrapped gag gift with $2 being the limit. One guy showed up and handed his gift to the faculty member dressed as Santa. When that particular gift was opened it was a 12 pack of Schaefer's Light which was under $2 including 60 cent deposit and tax. He had to tell "Santa" to make sure that his gift went to someone 19 or older when he was handing out the gifts.

Red White and Blue was undrinkable. I had my standards.

Here is my beer drinking chart from college:

CHC - I lived just around the corner from them. We called so often they they knew our voice when we ordered. We ate there almost 3-4 times a week. I may have literally shed a tear when they closed. Last I heard Pappa CHC retired and Mamma CHC worked at Hyvee for a while. I hated that they didnt reopen somewhere.

Gyro cart man on welch and Main - ALWAYS a staple after late nights at the bars

Home team pizza - I know now it wasnt, but the huger huge after the bar was SO GOOD!!!

Little TaiPai - still open but in the old Davincis spot I think?

If Welch Ave and/or Pizza pit ever close, I may never eat at a restaurant in Ames again.

Almost forgot about the dirt cheap beer and burgers at Diamond Dave’s at the mall and the big mugs of beer with chili cheese fries at Indigo Joes.

Was The Boiler way out west on Lincoln Way? I was thinking of that one too.

Yep, I worked there throughout college '99 through '02. John Pfeiffer owned it and was an awesome person. Miss that guy and the restaurant!

I remember that McD's. Remember summer of 84, LA Olympics? The Russians were a no show, so the US dominated, and almost every game card at McDs was a food item winner. I had a cute GF, and she'd score piles of game cards. Ate at that McDs all summer.
back in winter of 92-92, the McDonalds west on Lincoln Way had a deal where they gave away BigMacs based on the temperature outside with the baseline being something like 10 degrees. Anything below that was free. Ate a lot of Big Macs that January.
