I don't think I have a "worst book" that I have still finished. I read The Old Man the Sea, and I did not like it, but I can't classify it as the worst. I didn't like the third hunger games book either. I don't even really remember what happened in that book anymore because I cared so little while reading it. Most books that I find bad, though, I don't finish.

Oh and other books I hated in school include The Pearl by Steinbeck and Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene. Probably more that I have removed from my memory.
I liked Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck though, so The Pearl might have been ruined by the teacher more than anything else.

I think some of the analysis that can go on in a classroom for literature can kill the enjoyment of a book. I mean, why does a dude traveling down the road have to be some grand allegory for man's journey through life? Maybe dude just wanted to go to the store or something.

Some guy turns into a giant bug, his mother can't stand the sight of him, his Dad paralyzes him, and then he finally dies.

My question for that story was did the guy turn into an average size bug or was he bug that was the size of your average adult male?

this was totally a big part of why I didn't like most of the books I was "forced" to read. Why does it have to be about the meaning of the universe and ****. Why can't I just enjoy the story?

Welcome to what the Core Curriculum has been doing to literature since the Department of Education was created, and became more intense since NCLB was created.

Also, The Pearl is an awesome novella about how greed corrupts man and that we should always appreciate what we have instead of always wanting more.

I was just guessing on the smut blogs - I mean, they have blogs for EVERYTHING, I'd guess smut?? But, on the other hand, I think that's what they have pictures for that you can also get for free, so maybe people aren't dedicating blogging time to that. But, on the OTHER other hand, maybe they think they'll get a book deal on their smut?

I think I heard a friend say that the chick who wrote 50 Shades of Grey actually first wrote it as fan fiction for the Twilight series, the main characters are supposed to be... the pasty guy who was Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter, and Kristen Stewart. I don't know their names, not into vampire crap. But, anyway - from what the girl in my book club said, apparently she just changed the names and a few of the circumstances (probably like sucking on people's blood), and 50 Shades was born. I have no clue if that's even a little true, though - but it goes back to wondering if there must be some place where people are submitting these things and they're getting picked up for publication?
Now we won't hear from Angie for weeks as she "discovers" smutfanatic ;)

I realized that I make it sound like I'm a huge purveyor of smut - I'm really not!! I'm actually a little amazed that hardcore smut literature is out there when there is so much porn for free. I guess I don't know a lot about the male mind - I thought usually you all are more visual?

That may be true. But even the really graphic stuff?
That's why my grandma still reads those cheesy romance novels. Women are more mental with their smut while guys just want to actually see the good bits.

Wait males read this stuff... I thought it was a female thing (thinking like you men would go for the visual). I searched the app market*out of curiosity now that I know about this underbelly of the written word. Hundreds of apps for amatuer erotic stories... first up was literotic. I went no further I did not want that in my google play history :) I am shocked I had never heard of this.

This reminds me of something that happened in 8th grade. I was dog sitting for my next door neighbor (mormon engineer and wife) and they had a kennel in the basement. They left all the stuff out for me but on the third day he was shaking visibly so I went looking for the thermastat as they had turned the heat down . Why I looked for it in the basement I don't know but I did and went into what I thought was a utility room only to find a giant s&m dungeon and right by the door was a book shelf filled with issues of "penthouse letters".
Being an eight grade boy I thought I hit pay dirt only to discover they were stories. I hadn't really thought about that until now. Well I guess those guys probably get that stuff online now. Never could look my neighbors in the eye again ;)
