I don't care for soccer as takes out of the game the skill level of using one's entire upper body. The best plays in BB, FB, baseball (for example) require the agility and skill to use all the gifts of one's body....not just legs and feet (OK>..and head sometimes). On top of that, your legs and feet are encumbered by also having to dribble the ball with them.

I might be the only one, but I got a good chuckle out of this post.

I think most football/basketball/baseball/hockey writers could write better articles if they actually felt a need to proselytize.

I don't even hate soccer -- I love the World Cup and I mostly just like to give the fans **** --- but this writer makes a terrible argument. It's an invalid comparison -- he's comparing a very select number of high-end soccer matches to low-end regular season football games. And it's in Miami where soccer is probably a tad bit more popular than the rest of the US, and Cristiano Ronaldo is playing, maybe the 2nd biggest star in the word.

The other sports don't even have to worry about quality of play like the MLS does, so that whole jumbotron vs. quality of play argument doesn't fly. He's just forcing a ****** argument.

Popular stuff sucks, I dunno, that sounds like hipster logic.

Seriously? You can't think of anything popular that sucks? Look at the 80s, Justin Bieber? It's funny you call me a hipster, you couldn't be further from the truth on that. And I didn't say soccer sucks, my kids play it and I don't even try to tell them not to. In fact, I go to their games, practices and cheer them on. It's a sport I don't enjoy watching, but that's the same for the NBA, golf and NASCAR.

I was just making the point that almost everyone who has tried to get me to go to an MLS game or get me to watch it on TV use the same argument first, "It's the most popular sport in the world!" That's just a dumb argument to come right out of the gate with. Islam is the most popular religion in the world now, does that mean we should all join them?

I agree 100% that soccer bashers are dumber than the people that use "Most popular sport" as their argument, but it doesn't change the fact that just because something is popular, necessarily means it's good. Maybe it just goes back to what my mom used to tell me when I was a kid, "Well, if everyone else was jumping off a bridge, would you do that too?" Maybe it's just because the sport I love to watch, football, I don't feel the need to constantly tell everyone why they should watch it.

In the end, it's just a dumb argument over all. Who cares if soccer players are or aren't as tough as football players. **** golfers couldn't compete with either of them, yet plenty of people on here love golf.

Nothing makes me feel more adult-like than 90 minutes of buzzing vuvuzelas. In fact, it makes me feel elderly because you can leave the game with permanent hearing loss.

Great sport.

Here are my problems with soccer.

1.) Teams playing for a tie
2.) Flopping (I also hate this in NBA and NFL)
3.) Most soccer fans in america. When ever they talk about the EPL they make it seem like they are hip for liking it before it was mainstream in america.

I have watched a couple of national team matches in the last couple of months and would love to get to a game in Europe to experience the atmosphere.

Explain flopping in the NFL to me. I agree with the NBA part.

Hipsters like soccer, and they are essentially tastemakers for well-off white people, so popularity should increase there. Plus, there are people immigrating that are fans of soccer that probably make it more popular. It's got a foothold now.

Punters and kickers flop. QBs flop to try and sell a late hit/hit to the head. Receivers flop to try to draw pass interference. And lots of players fake injuries to slow down the offense particularly during no huddle situations. True 'flopping' has less benefit in football so there is not as much as in other sports but there is still plenty of gamesmanship/faking. Pro players will do anything to win, no matter what sport you are playing.

Honest question: What do soccer players do at an average practice?

pretty much what every other sport does...drills. 3 on 2 offense vs defense drills, passing drills, lots of running and jogging. Keep away drills where you are in a circle with defenders inside and you have to keep the ball or you go into the middle. Controlled scrimmaging where the coaches interfere alot when a mistake happens.

At least from my experience playing club soccer. You should go to a practice sometime and find out for yourself. You might actually get to like soccer.

Never played the game. When I was young in small town Iowa there was one sport available for kids before 7th grade football and basketball and that was Little League baseball. Since I have an eight year old who has played soccer now and is going to be on a traveling team I am learning about it so I can help her get better if it is something she wants to do. I guess I am in the minority. I am simply a sports fan and can watch just about any real sports and find something to like about it. Pretty much every sport has some nuance that you can respect and learn something from. Not being able to return and make paragraphs in posts is very irritating.

Islam is actually number 2 behind Christianity.

My thoughts on soccer:

the only reason it's the most popular sport in the world is because it doesn't cost a lot to play. You need a ball, and two things the ball has to go in, doesn't even have to be a net. It's similar with baseball, which would also be a very popular sport worldwide. Basketball is also rising in this regard.

American football is not a popular sport because you need a ball, a goalpost, and equipment. You don't really need any equipment for other sports like you do in football.

So while calling it the worlds most popular sport is true, it doesn't necessarily mean it would be the most popular if every country could have afforded to play football.

However, while I don't like to watch soccer personally because I think I can only watch so much of guys doing cool tricks with the ball while having some guy trying to poke the ball away, I do think its better to watch highlights. I'm like the same way with golf.

Hockey can go suck a nut, that sport sucks.
