Why so many long 2pt shots

It seems like the team (especially Babb) have been taking a lot of 2 pt shots that are only 1-2ft inside of the 3pt line. It is fine if it goes in, but if we are going to be taking a higher risk shot by distance, why don't we step back a bit more and shoot a 3 and get the extra point benefit? It seems like sometime we dribble in a step or 2 for a long 2pt shot to take what appears to be a more difficult shot than a spot up 3.

Shayoks really drove me nuts toward the end of the game. Passed on what would have been a wide open 3. Babb seems to be taking a lot of long 2s but he is hitting them at a pretty good clip lately.

Just to piss Fred and his clergy off

FIFY.

The general perception is that a jump shot is a bad shot now since the 3 pointer is easy for everyone.

Don't know what the percentages are like but I know NWB and Shayok knock them down and so can MJ...maybe this team just has players that happen to be good at the lost art.

Yeah Babb I like that shot, if you watch Monte in the NBA he's also waaaaaaay more dangerous with his almost automatic mid range shot. He's shooting an elite 3pt % as well but the guy can't miss an open mid range shot lately. Having both the 3 and the mid range shot makes Monte and Babb harder to defend.

Some of the other guys I'd rather they move the ball, drive to the hoop or get behind the 3 point line.

To challenge conventional wisdom....with many defense focusing on taking away 3 pt FGs and shots at the rim, you can get some open looks at the mid range. The key is getting the right players to take those midrange shots and that can keeps defenses honest. A pack line style defense (like what TTech employs) purposely gives offenses some pretty clean midrange looks.

A great example of this is the San Antonio Spurs this year who are an extremely efficient offense while exploiting the "openess' of the mid range and do not shoot nearly as many 3s as other NBA teams. When everyone is zigging, it sometimes means your advantage is to zag.

Especially Shayok (and to some extent Jacobson & NWB) seems pretty solid in this role of keep opposing defenses honest.

I am also not just talking about this game. it seems like we have been taking a lot of long 2pt shots this year.

I think we have several guys who are good at taking midrange jumpers. Shayok, Babb and Jacobson all come to mind as above-average midrange jumpshooters. If you make them I don't see it as an issue.

Also with the way block/charge is called anymore I'm so sure midrange isn't the place to be. Remember early in the year how many charges Shayok had called on him?

Not all long 2's are created equal. If you are taking a long 2 for no reason maybe, however if you are pressured long and drive by the defender but pull up before the help can get to you it is a good shot. If you are finding an open spot to beat the shot clock it is a good shot. If you are terrible (or struggling) from 3 but have been able to hit the long 2, it is a good shot. If the opponent's big has been swatting away everything, and you take the shot so he has no chance or you are trying to pull him out, it is a good shot. If the defense is extending the zone and you can drive around them to a soft spot and that soft spot is a long 2, it is a good shot.
