Why so many long 2pt shots

Simple answer is defenses know just as well as offenses that open 3s, layups, and FTs are the best shots, and are changing the types of shots that are efficient, especially at the college level where guys just aren’t practiced robots like some of the NBA guys. Babb is just comfortable off the dribble it seeems like.

The data dorks are getting a little annoying with that 3s and layups stuff. Not every team has a James Harden that can create good shots at the end of the shot clock.

Watch how the Spurs took off this year. THteir offense is top 3 over the last part of the season. Lots of midrange because that’s where their shot creators score and thus that’s where they create opportunities for others. You gotta get your own nerds and try to beat the other nerds.

With that being said, I was driving through BFE Oregon and didn’t watch the game last night, so I have no idea what kind of shots people are talking about. Rant over.

Babb is the only guy I have seen fake a fairly open 3, dribble once and then put up the 2 just inside the line. Maybe he is being covered better than I think.

To be fair, he is money with that shot though. I think he has a better shot when he's dribbling/stepping into his shot.

Why not take a step back and get 3 points? Still pointless even if it is wide open.
If its open, they should. Most of the long 2s Babb and Shayock take, they are stepping into, and in rythm off the dribble. They shoot better when moving forward. I can't think of either of them ever taking a step-back 3, which tells me they probably aren't that comfortable with the shot.

You nailed it. People are looking at generic analytics which suggest that 3s and lay-ups are better. Those analytics ignore the skill sets of specific players. 3s and layups were perfect for Naz Long. That's what he excelled at. His shooting mechanics didn't really lend themselves to a great mid-range shot (somewhat low release and he doesn't elevate that much on his jump shot). Haliburton is similar. Shayock and Babb both elevate well and have fairly high release points (Wigginton too) which lends itself to pull-up jump shots. Morris shot a lot of those his last two years as well and was very good at it.

I can deal with the long 2's now and again if they stop talking those terrible quick shots. We got burned on almost every defensive possession that happened.

I just read about an nba team scrimage where they made long 2s worth negative points. But yeah, it's probably good that a we go against the grain of what the top teams in the world think is the best approach to the game.
