A tight end in the first round is a definite no no. Except for Gonzalez most don't turn out to be worth the pick

S Ha Ha Clinton-dix would be the first choice if available. If he is gone I would go safety in the 2nd round. There is always some players who fall lower than expected so I would go best available if Clinton-Dix is gone and minus the tight end or any qb

Quarless and Finley are free agents this off season. As are Pickett, Raji, and Jolly. So DT and TE could be bare if the packers lose everyone in free agency.

Who else is a significant loss in free agency this year?

I think that's the opposite of the truth.

Here's the list of TEs taken in the 1st round between 2002 and 2012:

1. Vernon Davis, 49ers (No. 6, 2006)
2. Dallas Clark, Colts (No. 24, 2003)
3. Heath Miller, Steelers (No. 30, 2005)
4. Kellen Winslow, Browns (No. 6. 2004)
5. Brandon Pettigrew, Lions (No. 20, 2009)
6. Jeremy Shockey, Giants (No. 14, 2002)
7. Dustin Keller, Jets (No. 30, 2008)
8. Marcedes Lewis, Jaguars (No. 28, 2006)
9. Jermaine Gresham, Bengals (No. 21, 2010)
10. Daniel Graham, Patriots (No. 21, 2002)
11. Greg Olsen, Bears (No. 31, 2007)
12. Ben Watson, Patriots (No. 32, 2004)
13. Jerramy Stevens, (No. 28, 2002)

all but a couple have been solid to great.

Other notable free agents are

Sam Shields
Evan Dietrich-Smith
James Jones
M.D. Jennings
Johonny Jolly
John Kuhn
Jamari Lattimore
Mike Neal
Marshall Newhouse
James Starks
C.J. Wilson

Agree the TE position could be pretty bare. Maybe the re-sign Quarless and go with him and keep hoping Brandon Bostick improves.

None of those guys are real NFL SUPERSTARS, Finley was a 3rd rounder, Antonio gates was undrafted, gronkowski was a 2nd rounder. There are plenty of tight ends available later in the draft that are a better value.
