Just for fun - which fake loss was worse?
For me, it was 2002 Eddie Robinson Classic - FSU was No. 3 team in the Nation - we were playing in front of national audience and after a bad first quarter, we were toe to toe with them. A win would have taken us to a better bowl than Humanitarian Bowl.

That's a tough one. I watched both on live TV and I still get pissed when I think about either one of them. I would probably go with the bama game because I still think about it every time I see a replay of any field goal that is close

Iowa State won 6 straight after that game before the end of year cave in losing 4 out of 5 Big Xii games. The game that sent them to Boise was getting Upset by UConn at home the final game of the season. A win over UConn would have had ISU 8-5 and heading to the Tangerine Bowl vs. Clemson. Instead TT got to beat up on the Tigers.

Yes, the team ran out of gas after getting hammered by OU. There was not enough depth in the team. Wallace I think threw 4 INTs in that game.

I agree - Eddie Robinson Classic was worse. I think Mac would say so too.

ISU woulda coulda shoulda had three straight nine-win seasons from 2000-2002 and two more in 2004 and 2005.

The 2000 team did win nine games.

The 2001 team won seven games and should have beaten Alabama in the bowl game. They also missed four field goals at Texas A&M and lost by 3.

The 2002 team won seven games and should have at least taken Florida State to overtime or had a chance to win the game on a two-point conversion. They also should have beaten UConn.

The 2004 team had seven wins and lost a close game at Iowa and probably should have beaten Colorado and Missouri. Pretty sure we missed two field goals of under 25 yards against Colorado and Mason Crosby made a couple 60+ yarders.

The 2005 team had seven wins and could have easily won any of the games they lost.

Went back to look at that 02 FSU team.
Bowden gave them zero scheduling breaks that season.
Their noncons were ISU, Miami, Florida, Notre Dame, then played Georgia in the Sugar.

I feel like the loss to Alabama stung more because it was in a bowl game. Since we’ve only won 4 bowl games in our history, any bowl win is a big deal.

At the time I don’t remember anyone expecting us to beat FSU, so even though it was disappointing that they called Seneca out, it didn’t seem like a crushing loss to me. It was like we were playing with house money that game.

I've never been more pissed at the world than when 10 year old me woke up to find out Seneca was ruled out.

To make it worse, I remember it being replayed over. And over. And over. And I could not handle it.

By that time I'm not sure how many bowl eligbile teams ISU could have beaten.
